  • Washington’s land preservation obsession

    Ron Poertner

Washington's land preservation obsession Just before Christmas with Congress in recess and the public on holiday, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar issued Secretarial Order 3310 that puts the creation of de facto wilderness areas back in the Bureau of Land Management's preservation tool kit. Environmentalists love it; landowners and resource providers not so much. What is particularly egregious about Salazar's order is that it enables the BLM to create wilderness-like areas without the consent of Congress. In the long run it...

But in the last few months we have been getting negative feed back on the exchange of our money. We have been in a number of places that will not take Canadian money. Why not? CODY BLOOMSBURG Community News Service UM School of Journalism

HELENA — They call it the Constitution Caucus, and its message rang clear as veteran Rep. Krayton Kerns rose in the state House Friday to oppose a bill to provide counseling for children from violent homes. "Don't vote your heart on this one, vote your oath," Kerns urged his fellow legislators. "The constitutional vote on this is no because it will grow government." Rep. James Knox, a freshman Republican from Billings, couldn't have agreed more. Killing the bill wasn't the easy thing to do, he said, but it is why he and o... Full story

  • Republicans tout anti-abortion bills

    The Associated Press

HELENA — Republicans running the Legislature made it clear that their opposition to abortion won't get lost amid the push on leading platform issues. About two dozen Republicans appeared at an anti-abortion rally at the state Capitol on Monday. GOP leadership has put its focus on such issues as making it easier for natural resource industries to do business in the state and cutting the state budget. But Republicans who... Full story

  • Lawmakers face long list of DUI proposals

    MATT GOURAS Associated Press

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Lawmakers scheduled to look at long list of DUI proposals this week were told that juveniles that kill while driving drunk in some cases need to be tried as adults. Rep. Janna Taylor of Dayton told the House Judiciary Committee Monday that her house Bill 18 would let prosecutors try juveniles as adults for vehicular homicide while under the influence. She said prosecutors are currently getting around the problem by trying extreme cases where drunk minors kill others in a crash with a reduced crime of n...

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

The Havre High swim teams have already seen plenty of stiff competition in the water this season. But this weekend, the Blue Ponies got a good look at what they will be up against next month at the state meet in Butte. The HHS boys and girls swim teams were in the Swarthout Pool in Great Falls Saturday for the Great Falls Invitational. The nine-team meet featured some of the top Class AA swimmers, as well as Class A rivals Billings Central and Hardin. And since all swimmers race together at the state meet, Saturday's... Full story

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

Being shorthanded isn't easy, especially when it looks like the women's side of the Frontier Conference is loaded yet again. But being shorthanded on the road is an even more daunting task, and winning on the road is hard enough, even at full strength. And this weekend, the Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team found life on the road to be difficult yet again, as the Skylights lost at Montana Tech 64-54 on Friday, then fell at UM-Western 70-59 Saturday night in Dillon. • MSU-N matmen succeed in Oregon

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

The Montana State University-Northern wrestling team didn't accomplish everything it set out to do in Clackamas, Ore., but the Lights came pretty close. Clackamas is the top-ranked NJCAA team in the country, and the Lights were open at 125 pounds, or the dual might have come out differently. But as tough a loss as it was on Friday night, MSU-N bounced back in a big way during Saturday's...

After the dust settled on this weekend's Frontier Conference men's basketball games, one thing has become quite clear – the league is wide open. • Four is enough: Pony girls survive Conrad

Daniel Horton Havre Daily News sports

A win is a win, and teams will take them anyway they can. But next time around the Havre High girls basketball team would probably like to do so with five players on the court. Saturday in Conrad the Ponies were able to get back to the win column. The Central A Blue Ponies defeated the Class B Conrad Cowgirls 49-46. But after a strange series of events, the Ponies played the last 1:30 or so with just four girls on the court. And despite the disadvantage, the Ponies were still able to come from behind and capture the nonconfer...

The Havre High girls basketball team is preparing to play its third game against a tough opponent in five days. And facing them on the road in Great Falls won't be easy either. The Ponies and Bison will tip off tonight at 5:30 p.m. "I know that they are down a little bit this year," Havre High head coach Dustin Kraske said. "But...

  • Browning subdues HHS boys

Daniel Horton Havre Daily News sports

Heading into Friday night's game, the Havre Blue Pony boys had spent a lot of time preparing for the conference rival Browning Indians. But even with the prep time, the Indians' pressure proved to be too much. Friday at the Havre High gymnasium the Ponies hosted the Indians in Central A action. But in a dominant win, the Indians defeated the Ponies 70-48. The big difference in the conference matchup was the Indians' pressure defense and high-tempo style of play. "It's one of those deals where if you make mistakes anywhere...

Saturday at the Havre High gymnasium the Central A Blue Ponies improved to 3-5 overall with a 51-46 win over the Class B Conrad Cowboys. "That was kind of a gut check," Havre High head coach Andy Smith said. "We were disappointed with how we played against Browning, we didn't do a good job whether it was offensively or defensively. But I thought the kids came out and played awfully hard on... Full story

    MATT GOURAS Associated Press

HELENA — Eminent domain is again a hot topic at the Legislature. Lawmakers are taking their first look at a bill from landowners and ranchers who feel they have been treated unfairly under eminent domain laws.
