  • Blue Ponies open Central A play on the road

    Chris Peterson|Updated Apr 10, 2017

The Havre High softball team took the field for the first time last weekend in Great Falls, but Saturday will be the first time the Blue Ponies play in a game that matters. That’s because Havre won’t just be playing in a jamboree like it did in Great Falls. Instead, HHS will be playing a Central A conference game, its first of the season. It will come on the road against Lewistown. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. Like the Ponies, Lewistown was one of the three...

  • Guest Column: Recycle pesticide containers

    Updated Apr 7, 2017

Recently, I attended a Montana State University Extension Service training to obtain a license for the application and purchase of pesticides (weed killers) for the ranch. The instructors didn’t mention what to do with the empty pesticide containers so I contacted the Montana Department of Agriculture about their Pesticide Container Recycling Program. They haul portable shredding equipment, bags and transport trailer to storage sites all over the state from Libby to Broadus, Scobey to Dillon and several places between. The...

  • Letter to the Editor: Learn how to support children's organ transplants

    Updated Apr 7, 2017

Dear Editor: The Children’s Organ Transplant Association was founded in April 1986 when residents of Bloomington, Indiana, rallied around a toddler who needed a life-saving liver transplant. In less than eight weeks, the community raised $100,000 to place the boy on the organ waiting list. But he died before an organ was found. Those community volunteers, along with his parents, turned tragedy into triumph by using the funds they raised to help other transplant families. For more than three decades, COTA has assisted...

  • Guest Column: Modernize the Montana Board of Investments

    Updated Apr 7, 2017

Who do you seek for advice when you have money to invest? Do you call up the local farmer, a teacher and a couple of lawyers? Most people use professionals who know markets and can give good advice on trends. I carried the bill of Rep. Virginia Court, D-Billings, House Bill 533, on the floor of the Senate last week. Virginia and I have both served on Legislative Audit Committee and agree that the changes in HB 533 will modernize the Board of Investments since the makeup of the nine members hasn’t changed in forty years....

  • Guest Column: Keep our county clean of noxious weeds - vote 'yes' on levy

    Updated Apr 7, 2017

Hill County Voters will be asked in the upcoming election to support the Hill County Weed mill levy. I have served on the Hill County Weed Board for several years and I can tell you this request is of an urgent matter. Hill County has been blessed with a weed coordinator who has received many awards and recognition for his innovative management of our district as well as weed control in our county. Hill County Weed Coordinator Terry Turner has managed to make every dollar count and be stretched as far as humanly possible for...

  • View from the North 40: Don't buy the blue ones, they're renegades

    Pam Burke|Updated Apr 7, 2017

In an era with an overabundance of women’s undergarments to choose from, I just want white cotton. You know, simple, no-lace, all-natural, plus a bit of elastic around the edges, non-granny-panties, white cotton underwear — those are, my theory holds, no-fail honest unders. The blues ones, though, are exhibitionists and will betray you every time. Herein lies the tale of two blue unders. I have had to wash clothes at the laundromat for about year now — don’t ask,...

  • Grief Poem April 7, 2017

    Updated Apr 7, 2017

No words can really express grief; it is a heart-felt pain. It may take months, or even years, walking this lonely lane.   And yes, we cry from time to time, tears are recovering sign. Tears are God’s gift to let us know, that some day we’ll be fine.   Wind sure can stir emotions up, we may have angry day. We are not sure what the cause is, when clouds are low and gray. Strong feelings sure can wear one out … we need a good night’s rest. Lord, You know us for You made us, to rest in You is best.   That empty chair...

  • Hello God, it's me, Mara

    Updated Apr 7, 2017

The Light You know, Lord, many years ago, when we were just little kids, only folks in towns had electricity. Since we were country kids, we didn’t know any folks in the country who even had electricity. We didn’t have that power source at our home, just gasoline lanterns to show us the way in the barnyard, so when we were in town for an evening visiting our relatives, which did not happen very often, all of a sudden, we noticed that the lights were beginning to start to shine along the streets. That was totally amazing t...

  • Out Our Way: The Gospel According to Goliath: Wait for it!

    Updated Apr 7, 2017

Mark 13:1-20 Out our way, spring is a longed-for and long-awaited event. When the Dairy Queen opens in late February, we know spring is coming, and while we may not be putting the snow shovels away until June, over at Walmart the Easter decorations and candy are coming into the back room along with bikinis and sunhats. We can read a calendar and even when the temperature hits 30 below and blizzards blanket the plains, we know spring is coming. But sometimes we can also look...

  • Pastors Corner: Standing firm on God, our rock!

    Updated Apr 7, 2017

As long as we live in this world we will face challenges on a regular basis. The key to living a victorious life is staying focused on the one stable thing in our lives. That one stable thing is God. David declared this in the Psalms many times. One example is Psalm 62:2 Only God is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold! I won’t be shaken anymore.(CEB) As we look at this Psalm, we see that David has come to an understanding that he has victory and stability in his life when he puts his trust and confidence in the Lord God...
