    JULIE PACE Associated Press

    - In this Dec. 6, 2010, file photo President Barack Obama, visiting Forsyth Technical Community College in Winston-Salem, N.C., speaks about the key to boosting American competitiveness, that it rests in the nation's willingness to invest in a more educated workforce, a deeper commitment to research and technology, and improvements in infrastructure, from roads and airports to high-speed internet. Under pressure to boost the economy the same message will likely be at the center of his State of the Union address Tuesday. AP...

  • Olbermann and MSNBC: a failing relationship

    DAVID BAUDER AP Television Writer

NEW YORK (AP) — Keith Olbermann's exit from MSNBC appeared abrupt to viewers of his show, but the talk-show host and his network were involved "in a relationship that's been failing for a long time," an NBC Universal executive said Saturday. Olbermann's announcement at the end of Friday's "Countdown" that it would be his last show quiets, at least for the moment, the most dominant liberal voice in a cable-television world where opinionated talk has been the most bankable trend over the past several years. As Olbermann read f...

  • Worker comp compromise faces problems

    The Associated Press

HELENA — Doctors and insurance companies say they are still opposed to a workers' compensation reform proposal because it cuts their rates to benefit the business owners and workers who helped craft it. A House committee started looking over the compromise crafted first by a panel appointed by the governor, and then an interim legislative committee. All sides agree workers' compensation premiums are too high in Montana and that something needs to be done about it. But doctors and insurance companies are turning to R...

  • Reality TV show didn't have federal filming permit

    The Associated Press

BUTTE — The U.S. Forest Service is investigating the filming of a reality television series featuring Montana game wardens because it appears at least one segment was filmed in the Bitterroot National Forest without a permit, Northern Region spokesman Brandan Schulze said. The issue was raised after a Whitehall man who had been acquitted of state charges, including outfitting without a license, was charged last month with two federal counts of filming bighorn sheep hunts on public lands in 2008 without a permit. The state c...

  • Windy Boy opposes pulling licenses from MIPs

    The Associated Press

HELENA — The state Senate decided more work is needed on one piece of proposed DUI reform after some lawmakers argued it went too far in punishing minors issued tickets for possession of alcohol. A measure to ban those under 18 from holding a driver's license if they are caught with alcohol quickly ran into trouble Friday as sponsors sought approval from the full Senate. Sen. Jonathan Windy Boy says the punishment is far too severe and argued the package of proposed DUI reform puts the Legislature on "the path of c...

  • Boehner: House leaders accept Senate tax terms

ANDREW TAYLOR, LAURIE KELLMAN - Associated Press

WASHINGTON— Their isolation complete, House Republicans on Thursday caved to demands by President Barack Obama, congressional Democrats and fellow Republicans for a short-term renewal of payroll tax cuts for all workers. After days of wrangling that even House Speaker John Boehner acknowledged "may not have been politically the smartest thing in the world," the Ohio Republican abruptly changed course and dropped demands for immediate holiday season talks with the Senate. The breakthrough probably spares workers a hit in t... Full story

  • Frontier Notebook: NAIA Polls have been strange so far

    George Ferguson

The NAIA won't release its next men's and women's basketball polls until the beginning of 2012, but the polls themselves are doing a disservice to several Frontier Conference basketball teams so far this season. And that disservice starts in Havre with the Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team. The Skylights have one nonconference game left in what has been a remarkable start to the 2011—12 campaign. But interestingly, Northern has yet to receive a s... Full story

  • Blue Ponies close out 2011 tonight

Both the Havre High boys and girls basketball teams are coming off of much needed conference wins in their last outing, but playing their last game before the holiday break, the Blue Ponies have a pretty tough nonconference opponent to get by first. Last weekend, both the boys and girls earned conference wins. The HHS girls defeated Lewistown and Belgrade, while the HHS boys defeated Belgrade in Central A play. Now entering non conference play once again, the HHS girls are 2-2 and the boys are 1-4. Tonight the Havre High's...

  • Feds investigate alleged Fort Peck lease scam

    Matt Volz

HELENA — The federal government is investigating an alleged fraud scheme in which people handed over their savings to invest in what they believed was an oil and gas development project on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation. The investors received nothing in return and the individuals soliciting the investments through Hotmail and Yahoo!-maintained email accounts don't actually own any oil and gas leases on the northeastern Montana reservation, according to court filings. Since last year, three people have sent more than $... Full story

  • Rehberg, Tester fight on tax, pipeline

    Tim Leeds

Taxes and an oil pipeline are taking a center stage in a Montana Senate race as well as in the national attention. Last-minute wrangling on extending payroll tax cuts and unemployment benefits with a side issue of ruling on a permit for the Keystone XL oil pipeline have both sides of the campaigns for Rep. Denny Rehberg, R-Mont., and Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., in the race for Tester's Senate seat, calling foul against each other. The Senate last week ignored a House bill to extend the tax cuts and unemployement benefits and... Full story

Nearly every family has a Christmas baby, the baby born in December. It might be your grandfather. It might be your aunt. It might be your brother. It might be your second cousin twice removed. It might be you, a child whose annual birthday is nearly forgotten in the bustle of celebration surrounding the birth of the Original Christmas Babe. I have several friends who were born in December. They all say the same thing. "With all the fuss about Christmas, I might as well not... Full story

  • Our View: Council should respect open meetings laws

    Tristan

The appointment of Kirk Fitch as Havre Police Chief seems to be getting widespread acclaim, even from those who were at first reluctant to go outside the department. But the method by which he was chosen is cause for great concern. Mayor Tim Solomon decided to make the hire without benefit of a public search. We think he should have had a more open process, but that is his decision to make. But then the mayor thought it would be a good idea to get City Council together to have a private get-together with his appointee before...
