  • In Montana, a plan to empower local sheriffs

    MATT VOLZ Associated Press

HELENA — The line of people stretched out the door of the committee room, all waiting for their turn to condemn or express their fears about the federal government. Most identified themselves as ordinary Montana citizens or tea party supporters united by the belief that the government is chipping away at their rights and abusing the constitutions of the state and the nation. They'd arrived for a public hearing on the so-called "Sheriffs First Act," a Montana senator's proposal to make sheriffs the supreme authorities in their...

  • George Ferguson Column: A dog can certainly be man's best friend

    George Ferguson

There's an age-old adage in this world that says "Dogs are man's best friend". I can't speak for anyone else, but for me, truer words have never been spoken. And a short while back, I lost my best friend. Rest easy Havre, not that best friend, not the one who lives in Tacoma, Wash., and has become a famous writer who covers the Seattle Mariners and Washington Huskies for a living. For nearly 13 years I was the proud owner of a black Labrador retriever named "Rock". And while... Full story

  • HHS girls fall short at Great Falls High

    Daniel Horton

After earning two straight conference wins last weekend, the Havre High girls basketball team was looking for a third straight win, this time against a tough nonconference opponent on the road. Thursday night the Central A Blue Ponies were in Great Falls where they took on the Class AA GFH Bison. But in what just seemed like an off night for the Ponies, it was the Bison that grabbed the 54-41 win. With the loss, the Ponies now sit at 2-3 overall. "We didn't put a full defensive game together," Havre High head coach Dustin... Full story

Blue Pony Justin Jensen goes high for a layup during Thursday night's boys basketball game between HHS and GFH in Havre. • Congress approves payroll tax cut, Keystone deadline

    Tim Leeds

After the speaker of the U. S. House of Representatives reversed himself and called for a vote on extending cuts to payroll taxes and extending unemployment insurance, a two-month compromise passed this morning. Before the vote — on an issue both sides of the aisle and both houses of Congress said they wanted — finger pointing continued over the issue, with both sides blaming the other for the rocky road to success. Both the House and Senate passed the bill within minutes of each other. The proposal is a rewrite of a bip...

  • Tax cut survives: Congress votes holiday approval

    ANDREW TAYLOR, Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — Barely beating Santa's sleigh, Congress delivered a last-minute holiday tax-cut extension to 160 million American wage-earners on Friday, just when it looked like they and millions of unemployed workers were going to be left with coal in their stockings. It was a major yearend political victory for President Barack Obama, a big slice of humble pie for House Republicans and a blow to House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, who'll have an angry band of tea party lawmakers to deal with when Congress returns to W...

  • Judge grants Beach a new trial for 1979 crime

    MATT GOURAS, Associated Press Writer

HELENA — There is enough evidence of innocence to order a new trial for a man who has spent nearly 30 years in prison for murder — but not enough proof yet to set Barry Beach free, a judge ruled. Beach told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Wednesday that the decision, subject to appeal to the Supreme Court, was a huge breakthrough "after 32 years of fighting the system." The case has gripped the small northeastern Montana town of Poplar since 17-year-old Kim Nees was killed in 1979 on a festive summer night at...

BILLINGS (AP) — The man convicted in the 1979 killing of a Poplar girl is getting a new trial. KULR-TV reports (http://bit.ly/rrj5q1 ) a District Court judge in Fergus County ruled Tuesday that new evidence could convince a jury to acquit Barry Beach. The 49-year-old was convicted in 1984 in the beating death of 17-year-old Kimberly Nees largely based on his own confession. Beach, who has spent 28 years in prison, argues that he was coerced into the confession by out-of-state police. His attorneys have argued a group of g...

  • Put limits on mercury, maintain pristine Montana

    Tristan

Editor: After a trip outside our beautiful Big Sky Country, it is not hard to come home and appreciate all that we have. Recently, I made a trip to the Grand Canyon, and I returned awe-struck at the beauty and magnificence of one of the great wonders of the world. However, I was equally stricken by the obvious haze staining the sky over it. That haze was air pollution. It had traveled hundreds of miles from the towns and cities in the states surrounding this splendid landmark. Montana's clean air, vast open spaces and...
