  • Vermont assumes a heavy burden in Iraq war

JOHN CURRAN Associated Press Writer BENNINGTON Vt

Vermont, a bastion of ex-hippies and Ben & Jerry liberals, has another distinction seemingly at odds with its peace-loving, tie-dyed politics: It has suffered more deaths per capita in the Iraq war than any other state. Beginning with Chief Warrant Officer 4th Class Erik Halvorsen on April 2, 2003, a total of 22 Vermont men have perished in roadside bombings, firefights, sniper attacks and helicopter crashes during the six-year-long war. "The losses we've had in Vermont have touched most of the state because we're so... Full story

  • Apple tablet stirs up video game business

BARBARA ORTUTAY AP Technology Writer NEW YORK

When Apple introduced the iPhone, it shook up the cell phone business, but it also changed the way people play video games. About a quarter of the 100,000 applications that can be downloaded to the iPhone are games, ranging from the simple "Doodle Jump" to a version of "Grand Theft Auto." Now, with the looming launch of a tablet-style computer — already nicknamed the "iPhone on steroids," with a bigger screen that might have a place in the living room — Apple could pose an even tougher challenge to established players in the...

"They are extremely vulnerable," said Kate Conradt, a spokeswoman for the aid group Save the Children. She said U.N. experts estimate there may be 1 million unaccompanied or... Full story

George Ferguson column: College football can be a cruel game Montana State University-Northern head coach Mark Samson summed it up pretty well after Northern's 34-23 loss to Rocky Mountain College Saturday at sun-drenched Blue Pony Stadium. "It's frustrating right now, it's tough because we've got a lot of kids who are playing really hard and they are not getting the results in terms of a win," Samson said. George Ferguson. Havre Daily News sports editor

Mariani leaves his mark on the Big Apple George Ferguson. Havre Daily News sports editor The New York football Giants didn't make it easy on former Havre Blue Pony and Tennessee Titans' wide receiver Marc Mariani on Sunday afternoon. It wasn't that Mariani, the Titans' return man, was perplexed by the Giants' special teams or had trouble with finding holes on his returns. It was because the Giants simply struggled so much on Sunday in Tennessee's 29-10 win at the new Meadowlands Stadium, they hardly kicked off and didn't...

Northern had been on the road since Aug. 18 when it finally got to play at home Friday night against the Lewis-Clark State Warriors, but a three-game sweep at the hands of the Warriors, and a disappointing four-game loss to Westminster College on Saturday night dropped MSU-N from second place all the way to sixth in the F...

  • Editorial: The Planning and Zoning Committee gets it

    Tristan

We applaud Havre's Planning and Zoning Committee for continuing to pursue an ordinance requiring city businesses to register with the city. It is especially noteworthy that councilpersons' Janet Trethewey, Pam Hillery and Andrew Brekke understand the importance and need for such an ordinance in spite of the lack of support from Mayor Tim Solomon. We encourage the committee to move forward with the ordinance and abandon the farfetched plan of voluntary registration. What the committee seeks and requires of businesses...
