    Chris Peterson|Updated Feb 5, 2018

When it comes to high school sports, time seems to always fly by. And for the Havre High boys basketball team, that's especially true as senior night has already snuck up on the Blue Ponies. One of our objectives has been working with Montana Department of Transportation toward commonsense, cost-effective Highway projects. The voice of the people was able to s...

  • Administration approach to sage grouse conservation hurts Montana's people, economy

    Updated Feb 2, 2018

Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke long has long claimed to be a “Roosevelt Republican.” He has said time and again that he will stand with the West and not allow the overreaching arm of Washington, D.C., to hold us within its grasp. But his recent actions have indicated a different approach. In 2015, a diverse group of stakeholders including governors, resource managers, ranchers, farmers, sportsmen and women, business owners, scientists, and energy developers came together as a community to openly and honestly discuss how bes...

  • Havre and the War Involving World

    Updated Feb 2, 2018

Editor's note: This is the second in a series of three articles by Keith Doll. The first ran in the Havre Daily News Dec. 28 Life in the trenches was beyond horrid and unbearable. You might be new to the front line and told not to look out because of snipers. Some still did and a sniper shot him in the face. Shrapnel and bullets caused many head and neck injuries in the Great War, helping the start of plastic surgery. Soon, the need for steel helmets arose. Before 1915 the...

  • Hi-Line Living: Hi-Line Hell Freeze

    Paul Dragu|Updated Feb 2, 2018

Hockey in Havre makes sense. It doesn't take much straining to see why one of the coldest places in Montana - in the U.S. - would embrace a sport that started in another winter town, Nova Scotia, Canada, at a time before indoor ice rinks. Before the Havre Ice Dome was built in the mid-1990s, people played hockey on the outdoor rink on Fifth Avenue. Once the Ice Dome was built, hockey fever exploded, local experts say. Hockey enthusiasm on the Hi-Line encompasses a wide age...

  • Out Our Way: First Church of Who?

    Updated Feb 2, 2018

Out our way, horses tend to need to create a pecking order. If you bring a few new horses into the pasture, there will likely be some jostling to determine status. There is only one alpha horse and the others follow the leader. When a new horse comes into the herd, there will be a quick determination of his or her status. Usually this is determined with kicks, bites and posturing. I had noted old Doc had a few scars and pieces of hide missing. Well, that's the way it is with...

  • The Scriptures on Finances - Money - A blessing that can bring problems

    Updated Feb 2, 2018

Proverbs 10:22 The blessing of the LORD brings wealth, and he adds no trouble to it. My favorite book of the Bible is Proverbs. There is much practical wisdom in the Bible regarding money and finances. All of us may say we want to be blessed, but many of us are not willing to pay the price of obedience to the Lord. Many Christians may associate having money with being blessed. It is possible that having money can be a blessing, but it is also possible that money can cause a number of problems if we do not recognize the...

  • Hello God. It's me, Mara

    Updated Feb 2, 2018

Lord, who would think that cobwebs would remind us of You? A friend shared that her hubby asked her where she’d put the long-handled duster. She gave him a quizzical look and told him, “back corner in the laundry room closet” then asked him why he needed it. He answered, “Well, dear heart, I need it to get rid of these cobwebs. We’ve got them all over — haven’t you noticed?” Apparently she’d not noticed, but she followed his gaze up into the skylight in their bathroom and was astonished! Where did all that dusty gray string...

  • Grief Poem - Walking Alone

    Updated Feb 2, 2018

We think of you in silence, dear, we often speak your name. But all we have are memories now, your picture in a frame. Your resting place is up the hill, flowers put there with care, But no one knows how our hearts ache; we turn and leave you there. It’s lonely here without you, dear; we miss you more each day. Our life is simply not the same since you’ve been called away. Death took away our dearest one, a life linked with our own … No one can know how we miss you, as we move on alone. Sometimes at home when it’s quiet, we f...

  • Streaking Ponies ready for round two with the Eagles

    Chris Peterson|Updated Feb 2, 2018

With the five games to go in the regular season, the Havre High basketball team has already done all it can in the Central A conference, clinching the top spot two weeks ago with a win over Belgrade. However, the Blue Ponies are far from satisfied and while an undefeated season is still a possibility, head coach Dustin Kraske and his team aren't focused on that. Instead, the Ponies are prepped for Fairfield and Lewistown, their opponents this weekend. The top-ranked Ponies...

But Thursday night in Billings, the Lights didn't let another big road win get away from them. Northern traveled to Rocky Mountain College to start a four-game road trip Thursday night, and the Lights came away with an 80-71 victory, improving to 6-5 in the Frontier ahead of a big game with Carroll College Saturday night. • Ahead of divisionals Havre heavyweight Austin Ratliff is on the rise

    Chris Peterson|Updated Feb 2, 2018

For the Havre High wrestling team, the success or failure of a season is judged by what is done at divisionals and state. That's just the reality of winning the last five Class A state championships. But after another impressive regular season, the Blue Ponies run at another state championship starts Saturday in Belgrade, at the Eastern A Divisional tournament. The action will begin in the morning, with the championship matches to take place in the late afternoon. "I would...
