The Havre High swim teams have spent the last two months grinding. Whether it's practice and training, or races on the weekend, the Blue Ponies have been striving to reach one end - the Montana State Swimming Championships. Now, the time has finally come. Today and Saturday, the Blue Ponies will compete at the state meet, held inside the Swarthout Fieldhouse Pool at Great Falls High. • Celebrating History: Lots of local news 100 years ago

    Updated Feb 9, 2018

By Emily Mayer Outside of numerous articles regarding World War I printed in the Feb. 2 and 9, 1918 editions of The Havre Plaindealer ranging from shaming citizens for food hoarding to reminding citizens they “Can’t Get Away From Income Tax,” the news from Havre was mostly social. The only local news not involving gatherings in Havre was the monthly weather report from C. W. Ling. January 1918 saw four periods of chinook winds followed by below-zero temperatures, and 7.3 inches of snow still on the ground at the end of the m...

  • Letter to the Editor - Havre Daily at new low

    Updated Feb 9, 2018

Editor, I have not lived in Havre for almost 20 years, but have kept up on local news via the Havre Daily. The article that was posted about the Dean/St. Jude’s shut down was repugnant. This whole farce of a Senate campaign is bad enough, but when you take and publish gossip and rumors about a good family involved in a custody dispute, you have reached a new low. Tim Leeds and the HDN owes a public apology for their lack of ethics in this “story.” James Dean is portraying classic physiologic abuser behavior and you fed right...

  • Letter to the Editor - School actions should be for the children

    Updated Feb 9, 2018

Editor, Being a long-time Havre resident and a retired school teacher, I read with interest your recent article about the Havre Public Schools potential plans for reconfiguring the schools. I feel the school board should be commended for being proactive in their planning; it just makes sense to do that hard thinking and positing before the time to move forward arrives. I realize that the article contained ideas, with nothing set in stone, as was said, this is the time to get everything out for discussion. Some of the ideas...

  • Editor's Note: Reporting the news isn't always pretty

    Tim Leeds|Updated Feb 9, 2018

The Havre Daily News is in the job of reporting news, reporting the facts, to its readers. We don’t always like what we have to report, and sometimes we have to make judgement calls on what we print. People don’t always agree with us. We printed a story Monday about a candidate for the U.S. Senate — who has registered as a planned candidate with the Federal Election Commission and has attended several events as a candidate — causing a lockdown when he tried to pull some children from school, in violation of a custody ruling...

  • View from the North 40: In the end, the lessons proved to be good

    Pam Burke|Updated Feb 9, 2018

February must be a month to revisit topics because I’m back with marijuana-infused news, this time home-grown here in the U.S. and as wholesome as a Girl Scout working the annual cookie sales gig. Last week I reported on two Canadian cops who allegedly took marijuana from a drug bust, then proceeded to get very allegedly high — like panicked enough to call for help, but too messed up to explain the problem high and so high the problem turned out to be the other uniformed off...

  • Hi-Line Living: Working and shopping at Sally Ann's

    Alex Ross|Updated Feb 9, 2018

Matt Montagino walked into Salvation Army's Sally Ann Thrift Store, 23 years ago, and he has been working there ever since. At the time, Montagino and his wife had just moved from Seattle to Havre and he was looking for a job. "My wife and I walked in here and she said 'you can do this,' and I found that I could," he said. Montagino said that, when he was growing up, his father was a hoarder, so he is used to having lots of items around. He said jokingly that organizing items...

  • The Scriptures on Finances - Giving guards hearts against greed

    Updated Feb 9, 2018

2 Corinthians 9:8 God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. One of the insulators to help guard our hearts against greed is giving. Giving can be easy, but giving is also challenging. How do we find the balance between having our needs met and abounding in every good work? I would suggest that we can do both under the leading of the Holy Spirit. As men and women of God we are to avoid all extremes. There are some people who...

  • Hello God. It's me, Mara

    Updated Feb 9, 2018

February You know, Lord, February is Winter Losing Heart. Is this month sitting down for a breathing spell? As winter seems to relent, surely our area ranchers are pleased to have better weather for calving and lambing. We’re all in high spirits to see sleet melt and snow turn to slush. Even creeks are beginning to swell in some areas and are becoming noisy. At our place, black ground begins to show in patches. From our kitchen window we see cattle huddle around the friendly haystack. We know they are chewing their cud and in...

  • Out Our Way: When the chinook winds blow

    Updated Feb 9, 2018

Out our way, it's calving season and, just as regular as clockwork, the Alberta Clippers have come. It is February, and that's what we expect up here on the Hi-Line. Yet the skies are clear and the sun is bright most days, and we expect the chinook winds to come and take it all away in a week or so. As I tell my friends back East, the winters out here can be harsh, but out our way, God sends us reminders of spring even in February when the chinook winds blow. I remember when...

  • Bad winter causing local sports problems

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 9, 2018

It's been a rough 10 days for local Hi-Line sports scene. It's also unfortunate because it's one of the most important times of the season. Two winter storms less than a full week apart have played havoc with high school basketball, wrestling and swimming, and the worse of the two storms, Thursday's blast of snow and wind, couldn't have come at a worse time. First, it's state wrestling and swimming week, and that means not only are teams, but tons of fans out on the road....

  • HHS boys look to finish strong

    Chris Peterson|Updated Feb 9, 2018

With the crazy weather that has swept across the state, nothing is really certain when it comes to the local sports schedule. The Havre High boys basketball team wants another shot at the Browning Indians, but to get it, HHS needs some cooperation from the weather. The Ponies, who are 3-12 on the season, are poised to play back-to-back road games this weekend, starting tonight in Browning. Havre is also scheduled to play at Rocky Boy Saturday. However, if the Ponies play...

  • Historic Pony Seniors Say Goodbye

    Chris Peterson|Updated Feb 9, 2018

The Havre High girls basketball team has been on a roll of late and the only thing that might stop them from racking up more wins this weekend is the weather. The Blue Ponies, who are 14-0 on the season, are scheduled to host Browning, tonight for senior night inside the HHS gymnasium, before making the trip to Rocky Boy to take on the Morning Stars Saturday. Tip-off between the Ponies and Indians, if the game is played, is set for tonight at 7. Havre will play Rocky Boy Satur...

  • Northern loses close games at Western

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 9, 2018

Sometimes, a team just has another's number. That has certainly been the case in the three Frontier Conference doubleheaders between the Montana State University-Northern and UM-Western basketball teams this season. Thursday night in Dillon, Western swept the Lights and Skylights for the third time this year. The night was especially heartbreaking for the Northern men. Just over a month ago, the Lights led the nationally ranked Bulldogs at halftime, but came up short 79-77....
