    Updated Feb 14, 2019

Staff and wire report Both the U.S. president and U.S. Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., are calling the border security compromise released this week a victory. "The bill our conference committee crafted is the result of Congress doing what it's supposed to do - rolling up our sleeves and working across the aisle to keep Americans safe and provide the fiscal certainty they expect from their lawmakers," Tester, a member of the bipartisan joint committee that crafted the bill, said in...

  • 'Atmospheric river' dumps more rain and snow across the West

    Updated Feb 14, 2019

Staff and wire While frigid, icy weather continues to be locked over most of Montana, a storm fueled by a plume of moisture stretching over the Pacific Ocean almost to Hawaii dumped rain on California today, boosting the threat of debris flows from saturated slopes and flooding from rising creeks and rivers. In north-central Montana, the snow that fell Wednesday — setting a new record for the day in Havre at 3.4 inches — had ended this morning, but temperatures again had dropped. For the first time since Feb. 3, the tem...

  • Looking out my Backdoor: Distracted

    Sondra Ashton|Updated Feb 14, 2019

When our Rancho gardener comes in the morning, Leo often asks me, “Sondrita, how is your wonderful retired life?” “Yes,” I say. We laugh. We both understand my meaning. “Yes, wonderful.” Wonderful, beyond any plan I might have dreamed. But, each day is filled with distractions. Take today, for instance. I get up, make my bed, drink two mugs of coffee, strong and hot, the way I like it. Order. Precision. On my mind is a vague desire to bake cookies. Oatmeal. Chocolate o...

  • Lights chase Cascade title in Great Falls

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 14, 2019

The Montana State University-Northern wrestling team has an end goal this season. It's been that way from day one. And that's to win an NAIA national championship. In order to do that however, the Lights must have a really good weekend at the Cascade Conference Tournament, which runs Friday-Saturday in Great Falls. But winning a team title and qualifying as many wrestlers for next month's NAIA national tournament won't be easy. In fact, in the Cascade, it's really hard. The co...

  • 9C Extra: Hi-Line Athlete Profile: Paij Peterson, North Star

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 14, 2019

When it comes to 9C girls basketball, it's doubtful many players in this weekend's tournament have logged as many minutes in tournament games inside the famed HHS gymnasium as North Star's Paij Peterson has. In fact, when it comes to being a veteran of the 9C tourney, Peterson might as well be the poster-child. That's because, from her first days as a freshman at North Star, Peterson has been a varsity athlete, whether in volleyball or on the track. But, where Peterson has...

  • Knights ground T-Birds in a thriller

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 14, 2019

The Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds are perhaps the most-improved team in the District 9C this season. But, over the last month, no team has been playing with as much momentum as the North Star Knights. So, it was no surprise that, in Wednesday's opening round of the 9C girls tournament, the two teams butted heads in a great game. In the end, it was the Knights who prevailed, thanks to a layup and key free throws from Kenidee Wolery in the final minute, as the Knights held off th...

  • No Sweat: Box Elder into the semis

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 14, 2019

The Box Elder Bears haven't lost a District 9C regular season game in two years. They have also been ranked as one of the top teams in Class C girls basketball for just as long, and for even longer, they've simply been really good. Add to that the fact the Bears started Wednesday night's 9C girls tournament not only a perfect 18-0, but as the defending state champions, and one would think the Box Elder players would be feeling the heat, even if its miserably cold outside. But,...

  • MEAN GREEN

    Chris Peterson|Updated Feb 14, 2019

For about a quarter and a half, the Chinook Sugarbeeters hung right with the Turner Tornadoes and for a little while, it looked like an upset might be brewing in the first round of the District 9C girls basketball tournament. But there is a reason why the Tornadoes were the third-place team during the regular season in the district. And led by Shyan Krass, Sarah Billmayer and Melanie Watkins, Turner reminded Chinook of that with a 19-6 run to end the first half. That extended...

  • Longhorns stampede their way into 9C semifinals

    Chris Peterson|Updated Feb 13, 2019

In its opening-round victory over the Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks Wednesday inside the HHS gymnasium, the Fort Benton Longhorns didn't play their most efficient offensive game of the season. But in the end, the Fort Benton defense was so dominant that it didn't matter. After forcing 21 turnovers in the first half of an impressive performance defensively, Fort Benton jumped out to a 36-5 halftime lead, as the Hawks managed just two field goals and nine field-goal attempts in...
