    Paul Dragu|Updated Feb 26, 2018

Local police officers have been spread to all Havre public schools today to watch and guard after a threat was found Thursday in a Havre High bathroom. Despite the threat, and the seriousness with which the school administration and local law enforcement is taking it, school is in session today. “Obviously, there was a threat,” School District Superintendent Andy Carlson said this morning, adding, “We would not hold school if we had a more credible threat.” Carlson would not say why the threat is not credible enough to canc...

  • Conservation easement would be win for all Montanans

    Updated Feb 23, 2018

Montana’s farms and ranches are an essential part of our state’s economy. They also provide important habitat for wildlife and, often, public access for hunting and other recreation. Working lands support big game, upland birds and waterfowl, as well as numerous nongame species. That abundance didn’t happen by chance. For decades, Montana hunters and landowners have worked together to restore and manage the public’s wildlife on private habitat. Hunters and landowners don’t always agree, but our cooperation has given Montana t...

  • View from the North 40: Nature is wondrous, but not always pretty

    Pam Burke|Updated Feb 23, 2018

Nature is all around us, and sometimes it’s a little too much in-your-face. A Cooper’s hawk in upstate New York is helping one city with its pigeon problem, but not everyone is appreciative. A red-eyed, crow-sized raptor, the Cooper’s hawk normally feasts on birds like pigeons and mourning doves, which are often found in urban and suburban areas — so now the hawks are, too. NYup.com reports that a bank in Dewitt, New York, had a Cooper’s hawk move into the area in the first...

And heading into the final weekend, the Frontier races couldn't be any closer either. • Out Our Way: Hitting a dry spell

    Updated Feb 23, 2018

Out our way, we sometimes don't get all the moisture we want. Even a winter like this one with one Alberta Clipper after another may not provide enough to fill the reservoirs this summer. The snow has been mostly powder, and while it makes travel tough, there just isn't that much water in it. But sometimes we need a dry spell. I recall fighting some grass fires in Wyoming when I was in the volunteer fire department. Whole pastures went up and the cattlemen knew the grazing...

  • Pastor's Corner: Commitment

    Updated Feb 23, 2018

We celebrated a wedding at Abundant Life recently. The bride and groom wrote their own vows, and I was very impressed with the promises they made to each other. One statement in particular has been rolling around in my head since then. Here’s my recollection of what was said: “This is not a promise of contentment but of commitment.” That statement expresses a level of maturity and understanding that I admire. In this case, the bride was the speaker. She apparently recognizes that life in general and marriage in parti...

  • The Scriptures on Finances - Trust in God to show us the way in which to walk

    Updated Feb 23, 2018

This year I purchased some financial books by Howard Dayton who is the author of “Money and Marriage God’s Way.” I enjoy listening to him on the radio when he shares Christian principles about money. I was most impressed with how Howard served his wife through her illness for several years before she passed away. I would like to share some highlights of Mr. Dayton’s book in this article. Isaiah 55:8-9 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than t...

  • Hello God. It's me, Mara

    Updated Feb 23, 2018

You know, Lord, re-reading a blurb from way back, our first astronauts, while being trained for that moon flight, were required to give 20 answers to the query, “Who are you?” If we took the same test ourselves, and ran out of things to add to that list, we might ask ourselves if we had truly answered the question. A friend shared that while browsing through some books at the library, she ran across some e. e. cummings poetry — Edward Estlin “E. E.” Cummings. 1894 — 1962. A friend had told her about his poetry some years...

  • Fort Assinniboine - the beginning of north-central Montana

    Paul Dragu|Updated Feb 23, 2018

Before Montana became a state, before the name Havre had ever been emblazoned on, or staked in, any part of the Hi-Line, there was a Fort Assinniboine. "If it weren't for Fort Assinniboine, there might have not been a Havre," said Candi Zion, a historian and former chair of the Havre/Hill County Preservation Commission. At the time of its establishment, the fort stretched 220,000 acres. That large swath of territory covered a portion of present-day Havre, as well as Rocky...

  • Eagles end Blue Pony boy's run in Billings

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 22, 2018

However, things stalled for the Ponies late in the second stanza. Trailing by just three points, Havre would score just four points in the second period, while Sidney's Max Peters drilled his third 3-pointer of the first half, sending the Eagles into the locker room with a 26-17 lead. From that point, the Ponies didn't threaten again, though they did pick up the pace offensively. Parsons continued to have a strong outing, but Aaron Entz hit a three to extend Sidney's lead to 3...
