  • Budget proposal keeps Amtrak in funding

    Alex Ross|Updated Mar 26, 2018

Editor’s note: This has been revised to more accurately reflect Mark Meyer’s guest editorial. Although a former Hi-Line resident has warned people that the Passenger Rail Association is “pulling the alarm bell” regarding the future of Amtrak long-distance passenger trains, the members of Montana's Congressional delegation said they will support keeping Amtrak's Empire Builder running along the Hi-Line in its route from Chicago to the West Coast. Cut Bank native Mark Meyer,...

A Havre man received one-year probation for drunkenly crashing and rolling over a vehicle, injuring the two passengers. Keiffer T. Nordgulen, born in 1989, was sentenced Wednesday in state District Court in Havre, after a multi-day sentence hearing, to one year in the county jail — all suspended — for the offense of misdemeanor negligent endangerment. He received credit for one day served. Nordgulen’s sentence is part of a last-minute plea deal that dismissed a felony criminal endangerment charge, as well as two misde...

    Chris Peterson|Updated Mar 23, 2018

One would never know it by looking, but high school tennis season is here, and for the Havre Blue Ponies, it's really here. Even with piles of snow still resting on the ground all over most of Montana, the Blue Ponies, of 17-year veteran head coach George Ferguson, will begin their regular season Saturday on indoor courts in Cut Bank. Yes, even though Havre has spent just as much time shoveling the Bill Vaughey Memorial Tennis Courts, as it has practicing, the Blue Ponies are...

  • Setting winter records - and it's not over yet

    George Ferguson|Updated Mar 23, 2018

Don’t put your shovels away yet, or at least keep them close by. That was the warning from Jim Brusda, chief meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Great Falls Thursday. Brusda was referring to the fact that indications are winter weather is far from over in Havre. And there’s quite a few reasons why — but the biggest is snow. “The snow pack,” Brusda said of why Havre is experiencing well below normal temperatures deep into March, and more colder temps are being...

  • View from the North 40: If it smells like a crappy cover up ...

    Pam Burke|Updated Mar 23, 2018

I was never one of those chicks who had guys rushing to do things for her or even to save her from herself. I wasn’t one of those uber-pretty and delicate girls for whom guys fell over themselves, and I had enough sarcasm and swearing to make anyone possible rescuers think twice. Plus, my ridiculous parents raised me to be independent. What was that about? That said, I was raised to expect some coddling from loved ones, as I should do for them. My husband, John, does a fair j...

  • Contact congressional delegation about bullseye on Amtrak

    Updated Mar 23, 2018

The Rail Passengers Association — a 50-year old passenger train advocacy group — is “pulling the alarm bell” regarding the future of Amtrak long-distance services. There is good evidence that a major discussion going on within Amtrak to consider cutting and reconfiguring its long distance trains — including the Empire Builder across Montana’s Hi-Line — to operate but 3 days a week. These discussions are apparently happening due to presidential influences in the White House, in the U.S. Department of Transportation and Amtrak...

  • Hello God. It's me, Mara

    Updated Mar 23, 2018

You know, Lord, real homes aren’t really spotless which was quite evident by the speckles than were unnecessary on the kitchen windows. In our climate, it isn’t wise in winter to wash the outside of the windows but late March — and on a day that was fair and had bright sun and blue sky — why not? It was a perfectly lovely day to get a headstart on spring housecleaning. After the windows were spotless and the kitchen back in order, it was surprising to see how much more tidy and clean the world really did look when looking...

  • The Scriptures on Finances - Be thankful for what God provides

    Updated Mar 23, 2018

This week we will begin looking at some material from the book “Never Enough?” authored by Ron Blue with Karen Guess. The idea of the book is to teach us financial contentment by implementing Biblical principles into our lives. What captured my attention almost immediately was when the author asked a pastor to share the biggest hindrance to the spread of the gospel in his part of the world. Without hesitation the pastor answered, “materialism.” The pastor went on to explain, “If a man has a mud hut, he wants a stone hut...

  • Out Our Way: All God's creatures got a place in the choir

    1Corinthians 12|Updated Mar 23, 2018

Out our way, we know that every critter has its own special gift. In the old days, a cowhand had a string of horses and often they had special talents or gifts. This was a horse for roping strays; this one was long-winded for the trail; this one was quiet and calm for nighthawk duty, and so forth. Now, old Doc was born and raised in the Bear Paws and his sisters were top barrel racers - fast, quick and sure-footed. Goliath, on the other hand, was a tad slow, clumsy and often t...

  • Hi-Line Living: Bullhook Bottoms to Havre: Celebrating Havre's incorporation year

    Paul Dragu|Updated Mar 23, 2018

Before there was Havre, there was an area south of the Milk River called Bullhook Bottoms, which got its name from the butte southeast of present-day Havre that regional Native Americans called Bullhook, from the legend of a bull bison gouging out the middle of the butte. The lowland, where the creek that starts at the butte flows into the Milk River, was known as Bullhook Bottoms. Great Northern Railway head James J. Hill, the "Empire Builder," wanted the name of the area cha...
