  • View from the North 40: What are the odds?

    Pam Burke|Updated May 3, 2019

Winning the big payout in any lottery is rare because the odds are astronomically against that happening, but that holds true for a lot of things. Because the lottery folks are in the business of making money, they take paying it out very seriously. Updated May 3, 2019

At the start of the legislative session, I delivered my fourth and final State of the State address. I shared my optimism that in Montana we can still be a shining example of how our political system is supposed to work and that as elected leaders we should base our decisions not only on today’s needs, but with an eye toward improving the Montana our kids and grandkids — future legislators and governors — will inherit. That optimism was proven out in the 66th Montana Legislative Session. Nearly every proposal I asked the l...

Through their organizations they recruited legislative candidates from both parties, kept track of legislative votes and selectively informed Montanans by the newspapers they controlled. Much of the old order changed with the adoption of Montana’s 1972 Const...

  • Out Our Way: Even so! - Judges 6:15-16

    Updated May 3, 2019

Out our way, we know that working cattle from horseback has its potential dangers. Wise cowhands remind me that if I am going to push cows in the Tiger Ridge, it is not a question of if I will get hurt but when. Indeed, even my doctor — a fellow horseman — laughed the second time I came to him with sprained ribs. He knew it would happen because it happens all the time. My pard, Charlie, also knew this, and indeed a few years back was so badly hurt they took him to the ER in town. He ended up in a wheelchair, and died not tha...

The sun shines brightly through the windows, but — oops! Those windows just barely pass the test and here we had jus...

  • Grief Poem - Remembering

    Updated May 3, 2019

If we give up when snow is deep, we’ll miss rest of the year. Can’t let the pains of one season steal memories that are dear. Remembering you who’ve gone away, far off to silent land, Somehow, some day we’ll understand, though we don’t clasp your hand. You were my North, South, East and West, my noon, my talk, my song; My working week, my Sunday rest; my Love you’re missed! You’re gone! Recalling flowers at our feet and birds singing above; Our prairie walks in the Springtime below God’s splendid love. We play and smile...
