    Updated at 9:30 p.m. The first round of the District 9C girls tournament was completed Wednesday night at the Havre High gymnasium as Fort-Benton-Geraldine beat Turner 61-36 and Chester/J-I beat Hays-Lodge Pole 63-18 Wednesday. The Longhorns and Hawks will meet in a semifinal Thursday night. The Chinook Sugarbeeters and Box Elder Bears advanced on the opening afternoon of the 9C girls tournament Wednesday in Havre.   • New law stiffens penalty for swindling the elderly

    HELENA (AP) — A new law in Montana will increase penalties for swindling elderly and disabled people. Gov. Steve Bullock on Wednesday signed House Bill 57 sponsored by Rep. Moffie Funk. The law will increase punishments for people convicted of securities fraud that victimizes vulnerable people, which includes anyone at least 60 years old or mentally disabled. Maximum punishments for stealing from the elderly and disabled will increase from $5,000 to $20,000 and from 10 years to 20 years in jail. Possible restitution for v... Full story

    The embezzlement trial of former Stone Child College President Melody Billy Henry and her husband Frank Henry began Tuesday morning. and it is continuing today. The pretrial conference at the Missouri River Federal Courthouse in Great Falls was held Tuesday morning and 13 trial jurors were chosen before the lunch break.     Havre City Council has given its backing to North Central Montana Regional Transit system and may soon give it some money. Jim Lyons, transit system director, appeared before council Tuesday to seek its endorsement of its most recent rounds of federal grant requests. Federal officials like to hear from municipalities that they support the bus service, Lyons said. Lyons said the project has grown tremendously over its six-year history.     The Great Northern Fair Board held discussions Tuesday night concerning pig wrestling and the fairgrounds manager position.
