  • Celebrating History: Lots of news from the courts

    Updated May 10, 2019

By Emily Maher The courtroom was the place to be according to the May 3 and 10 issues of The Havre Plaindealer. Lengthy articles ran in both papers about all the drama our ancestors were creating in one form or another. William Hill was acquitted of maiming livestock. Hill had a homestead near Simpson. According to the Plaindealer: “There had been little expectation by many of a conviction in this case as the evidence was not generally considered strong.” State Assistant Attorney General A. A. Grorud prosecuted the case on...

  • Legislature came together to send message on child sexual abuse

    Updated May 10, 2019

Actions speak louder than words. But words create the environment and world in which we live. Our actions and words matter greatly — and the actions and words of the Montana State Legislature in the 2019 session were clear: Montana will not allow sexual abuse, especially abuse of children, to continue. We removed the statute of limitations allowing for criminal prosecution of sexual abuse against children and established a Sexual Assault Survivors’ Day. Sexual assault, including crimes such as rape and incest, is a cancer in...

  • View from the North 40: Lenten muskrat, anyone?

    Pam Burke|Updated May 10, 2019

While the Catholic Church gets bashed frequently for its outdated church-sanctioned laws and pressured to modernize its ways, I’m here to lend some non-church support for one of those canons which started in the Detroit-area in the 1700s: muskrats on the menu for Lent. Yes, in the 1700s the missionary priests in the Detroit area allowed Catholic parishioners to eat muskrat “on days of abstinence, including Fridays of Lent,” the Archdiocese of Detroit told The Associated Press...

  • Out Our Way: Thanks, Mom! - Matthew 23:37

    Updated May 10, 2019

Out our way, a lot of folks raise chickens, and so Jesus’ allusion to a mother hen’s love of other chicks speaks volumes. Up on the Tiger we didn’t have chickens, but we had a lot of mama cows and calves — we saw the same thing. As Mother’s Day comes upon us it is fitting to realize that while Jesus calls God “Abba” — Papa in Aramaic — He also alludes to the maternity instincts of God. God is neither male nor female, and shows the attributes of both. A mother’s love is a great image.I recall three primary examples of it Charl...

  • Pastor's Corner: Nevertheless, she persisted

    Updated May 10, 2019

I want to start off this week by acknowledging the tension of these parenting holidays. For some, it is a joyous occasion of celebrating our loving mothers who have selflessly devoted themselves to their children throughout the years; it is also an occasion to be celebrated by your own children. But for others, this day accentuates the pain of broken families, the struggle with infertility, the loneliness of being single, grief of a child or a mother. You might even be caught on both sides of this tension within yourself....

  • Imagining Heaven: Put your trust in Jesus

Many of the ideas and Scriptures used in this article are from the book “Heaven” by Randy Alcorn. The first article in this series reminded each of us to send in our RSVP. We just can’t get into heaven by our works or...

  • Hello, God. It's me, Mara.

    Updated May 10, 2019

You know, Lord, as Mother’s Day approaches, we remember Mom and her hands which were always busy. They were wrinkled, shriveled and maybe a bit weak having been tools she used in her life to reach out, grab hold and embrace life. As our moms age, their hands became lined and yellowed with age; it happens to all of us. After our moms pass on, we may spend time with wonderful older women who doled out large servings of wisdom, guidance and love, but there’s no substitute for our own special Moms. We especially remember her hand...
