  • Central A got it right by settling it on the diamond

    Daniel Horton|Updated May 20, 2013

Heading into the weekend, I think the verdict was still out on the decision to begin having a Central A divisional softball tournament. I had heard arguments for and against the idea. But after sitting through a lot of great Class A softball on Friday and Saturday in Havre, I don’t think the tournament could have played out any better. Yes, watching the Havre High Blue Ponies take one of the top three spots, and punch their ticket to state after a 3-5 regular season conference record, would have been the icing on the cake, bu...

  • Panthers roar to the Central A softball title

    Daniel Horton|Updated May 20, 2013

With the first annual Central A softball tournament taking place over the weekend in Havre, one thing is clear, the Central A will be well-represented at the Class A state tournament this weekend in Belgrade. Friday and Saturday, the Lewistown Golden Eagles, Livingston Rangers, Belgrade Panthers, Havre Blue Ponies and Browning Indians, all battled it out for a spot in the Class A state tournament. The inaugural Central A tournament was played at the Sixth Avenue Memorial Softball Complex in Havre, where the Panthers were...

  • Ponies edged out of Central A tourney

    Daniel Horton|Updated May 20, 2013

It was clear that the Havre High softball program was hungry for a Class A state tournament berth, especially near the end of the season as the Blue Ponies played their best softball. But as the Central A conference proved to be a very tight race, the Ponies were left out yet again. The Ponies finished the regular season with a 3-5 conference record, and as the No. 4 seed heading into the first annual Central A divisional softball tournament. The newly decided-on divisional tournament now meant the Ponies had a shot at...

  • Havre track teams look strong in Livingston

    Daniel Horton|Updated May 20, 2013

The divisional track meet means the last opportunity to push kids into the Class A state meet, and the Havre High track and field teams had a good number of kids step up. Competing in Livingston Friday and Saturday at the Central A divisional meet, the Blue Ponies were well-represented. And though neither team earned a team title, a lot of individual athletes have a lot to be proud of, with just the state meet remaining this season. Belgrade has the numbers that make it very hard to contend with in the Class A ranks, and the...

  • Pony netters score big at Central A

    Daniel Horton|Updated May 20, 2013

A year ago, the Havre High boys and girls tennis teams took just four total players to the Class A state tournament. Fast forward one year, and the Blue Ponies doubled that total following a highly successful Central A Divisional tournament. From Thursday afternoon to Saturday evening the Ponies battled the elements and tough teams from Lewistown, Livingston and Anaconda as well as having to move the tournament from Lewistown to Great Falls Saturday in the 2013 Central A meet. The Havre boys successfully defended the Central...

  • Success or failure depends on your perspective

    Kari Boiter|Updated May 20, 2013

Editor: I want to offer another perspective to the May 12 article (online at http://www.havredailynews.com) titled “AP Exclusive: Mont. goes its own way on marijuana.” The story details a crackdown on businesses in plain sight and says the resulting prosecutions were “widely seen as a success and possibly a model for others.” The author forgot to account for some things in his “final scorecard” of 33 convictions. Most importantly, a death toll is omitted. Richard Flor was a registered caregiver in Montana and the first indic...

  • The IRS got a bum rap for its investigations

    Norman Bernstein|Updated May 20, 2013

The IRS tempest in a teapot should not be about how the IRS investigates political organizations that file for 501(c)4 tax-exempt status. Rather, it should be about why we have thousands, or, for that matter, any, tax-exempt political non-profits in the first place. This tax-exempt status, especially the 501(c)4 organizations, rather than the usual 501(c)3 nonprofits, is rightly subjected to more than the usual IRS scrutiny because these are the organizations most likely to misuse their status. They are not required to make...

  • Our View: FWP was right to buy half of Bailey Reservoir

    Updated May 20, 2013

Fish, Wildlife and Parks has been getting some unwanted attention lately for its purchase of land for hunting, fishing, picnicking and hiking. Its purchase of some land near the Canadian border started a massive rhubarb that affected the debate on FWP budget in Helena this year. Several bills were introduced to place limits on FWP’s ability to buy land. For the most part, these bills fell by the wayside. For whatever the value of the north county land in question, in general, public ownership of land is valuable for all M...

  • Ask DEQ to take another look at mine

    Judy Staigmiller|Updated May 20, 2013

Editor: At a time when the United States desperately needs to develop clean alternative fuels, the Montana Department of Environmental Quality is fast-tracking the permitting process for Arch Coal's Otter Creek Mine. Not only would the mine development seriously damage agricultural land and water quality, it would be a catalyst for building the Tongue River Railroad which would transport coal in open boxes to the west coast for export to China. Air pollution from coal dust is a terrible health hazard. Regulations for...

Jackie Rygg, the district’s instructional technology specialist, said most students would appreciate the change in policy. Lots of hurdles have to be cleared before the change can take place, school officials said, but they are confident things can be worked out. The district has purchased iPads for instructional purposes, and the school has made gre...
