  • Letter to the Editor - Beaver Creek needs non-lethal beaver management

    Updated Jun 23, 2020

Editor, Beaver Creek Park is such a treasure in the region and has such great potential for bringing recreational tourism to Hill County. It’s big business, so it’s shameful that the park is managed by a board that allows activities in the park that diminish it’s natural features and threaten wildlife and habitat. Beaver trapping is just one example. Children, pets and any random animal can be maimed or killed in a trap, yet the potential for tragedy is ignored for the benefit of trappers in a public park. Shouldn’t non-let...

  • Letter to the Editor - Woo hoo health care workers and social distancers

    Updated Jun 23, 2020

Editor, Much like a virus, disinformation requires a host to survive and, disappointingly, on June 17, 2020, the Havre Daily News printed an opinion piece replete with Oval Office-approved talking points — e.g. draconian, unconstitutional, “COVID pandemic,” etc. Per Johns Hopkins University, as of June 21, there were 8,842,537 confirmed coronavirus cases and 465,462 coronavirus deaths worldwide. There being just one confirmed case in Hill County is no reason to print drivel. Over the past week, coronavirus cases have incre...

  • Is 'defund' a dirty word?

    Updated Jun 23, 2020

Police in their traditional role will always be necessary. But it’s time to consider options other than the police for many problems’ facing society where traditional policing is not needed. It’s time to “restructure” our approach to policing. Adaption is America’s strength, and organizations stuck in the past are left behind (remember Kodak?). Our public safety systems, including our police, also need to adapt and address change. This is not just a big-city issue. In our public services, Montana faces many of the same ch...

  • Why does Beaver Creek Park need policies?

    Updated Jun 23, 2020

Having documented policies is a clear showing of intent, purpose, commitment and accountability, and builds trust with owners, managers, partners and others. Recent reluctance of the Hill County Park Board to explain, develop and document policies is eroding trust in managing our Beaver Creek Park. Some feel they should not be confined by policies. Some are afraid of being accused of violating policy and, therefore, it is better to not have policies. Without rules, regulations or policies, some folks that cut hay in the park...

  • A New Frontier for volleyball, too

    George Ferguson|Updated Jun 23, 2020

Just like with football, COVID-19 has made sure the upcoming Frontier Conference volleyball season will have a much different look to it. But the Frontier schedule, which was approved by the league's presidents last week, will also be a throwback to the past. The combination of the NAIA allowing just 22 dates for volleyball, and the loss of Lewis-Clark State to the Cascade Conference helped propel the league to go forward this season with a 20-match conference schedule - a...

  • Local Golf Report: No Rotary Golf Camp in July

    George Ferguson|Updated Jun 23, 2020

For the most part, the sport of golf has managed to stay ahead of the coronavirus pandemic. But, even though golf has had little trouble thus far, things are never perfect during this pandemic. And with that being said that, the annual Rotary Youth Golf Camp, held every July at Prairie Farms Golf Course, has been canceled this summer. One of the camp’s founders, Jim Kato, announced the decision to not run the camp last week. The Rotary Camp is like many other youth summer s...

  • Reach and Squeeze helps back muscles

    Updated Jun 23, 2020

From Montana Office on Aging and Brilliant Aging Proper posture and body alignment supports better balance, and it requires muscle balance between the chest and the back. Consider how many times a day you do something that contracts the chest muscles; things like picking something up, doing dishes, working on the computer, sitting or standing in poor posture. Each of these contractions shorten the muscles in front of the chest and lengthen the muscle in the upper back. Unless...
