  • View from the North 40: No need to worry. It was all under control.

    Pam Burke|Updated Jun 28, 2019

For reasons that still seem sound because we all made it home safe — which I’m happy to state at the outset for people who can’t handle suspense — two friends and I hauled horses to Power, Montana, and back home yesterday despite ill-weather predictions. To be fair, when the appointment was arranged, the forecast was for 70 percent chance of rain and thundershowers. The little storm icon only had clouds and rain that was depicted falling straight down from the clouds to the...

  • Letter to the Editor - Thanks for Beaver Creek Park

    Updated Jun 28, 2019

Editor, Beaver Creek Park remains a gem in my family’s history: Last week we spent the day there, cooked by fire and had an excellent time of it all — just as I recall from 60 years ago. Kudos to Chad Edgar and his staff for all their huge efforts, plus a thank-you to a community that supports its “Gem of the Hi-Line.” I want also to include the Havre Trails group for their ongoing work in providing a network of fine hiking routes for us to interact with the park, and its flora and fauna. Bill Green, Carolyn Green, Barry a...

  • Hi-Line Living - Weaver takes the reins at AQHA

    Pam Burke|Updated Jun 28, 2019

Big Sandy rancher and horse breeder Stan Weaver always wanted to have a production sale, but he never dreamed that his annual sales would lead to him taking the helm of the world's largest horse breed registry and membership organization. Weaver, who has already served four years on the American Quarter Horse Association executive committee, was appointed committee president during the organization's annual meeting in March. Ironically, though, even at the helm of an...

  • Hello, God. It's me, Mara.

    Updated Jun 28, 2019

You know, Lord, some time ago, Ivan Doig wrote: “These strange beings, ourselves, need the night but sometimes are entirely at odds with it.” We could name a few of us who may also have times when we are at odds with the night, so to expand on that thought, did You, Lord, want our attention? Is there a matter that we need to bring to You? Did we forget to pray for another, or are You trying to get our attention so You can talk with us? It seems there is a trough in the dark — as well as in the bed! — as one wallows, trying to...

  • Pastor's Corner: Look for questions, not answers

    Updated Jun 28, 2019

Midway through writing my last sermon, I took a little break as I am wont to do and checked my Facebook. Perhaps not a great habit but sometimes the mind can only remain focused for so long. As I scrolled my news feed, I came across a meme with the quote: “We are closer to God when we are asking questions than when we think we have the answers.” I liked it. I shared it. Then I went back to completing my message for Sunday’s worship. Now, evidently, the message of the meme continued to resonate with me because I wound up wi...

  • Imagining Heaven: Be faithful with gifts to earn the reward

    Updated Jun 28, 2019

Many of the ideas and Scriptures used in this article are from the book “Heaven” by Randy Alcorn. Revelation 2:17 states, “I will also give him a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to him who receives it.” We know that we will each receive a new name in Heaven. What else might we possibly be given? On this present earth Jesus was close to Peter, James and John. His friendships begun on earth and our friendships with other believers will continue. Each of us will be rewarded according to our differe...

  • Out Our Way: Waiting for sunrise - John 1:1-5

    Updated Jun 28, 2019

Out our way, patience is an art form. When Charlie and I worked cattle, he never slowed down, but neither did he seemed impatient. No matter what the task of the day was or how difficult, Charlie was content that we would eventually get the job done. Even when the two of us had all we could do to keep the herd together as we tried to move them to the fall pasture. We spent hours trying to move them forward and they kept breaking off onto a myriad of trails, doubling back on us and simply refusing to get where they needed to g...

The Trump Administration’s budget for Fiscal Year 2020 cuts Amtrak’s budget by nearly 25 percent, or $455 million. In this week's Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee hearing, Tester questioned Amtrak CEO Richa...

Havre is a great sports town and accordingly, there are a lot of great sports traditions.
