    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 13, 2017

For one Saturday in November all across the Treasure State, communities come together, though divided, to watch the annual game between the Montana Grizzlies and Montana State Bobcats. Yes, in bars, homes and just about anywhere there's a television, Cat-Griz watch parties are a long-standing tradition in Montana. For nearly three decades now, the Havre Wrestling Club has been hosting one of those parties in Havre. The event brings Havre fans on both sides of the Brawl of the...

  • Legislators must cut bureaucracy costs

    Updated Nov 13, 2017

Hello constituents of Montana Semate District 17, from your state capitol in Helena. The special session, called by the Governor, of the 65th Legislature will begin on Tuesday, Nov. 14. Our local papers will be printed after this letter was written. I trust we will be able to patch the revenue holes to our state budget. Five things are presently known: 1) Republicans do not want to raise taxes or revenue enhancements as they are being called; 2) Democrats do not want to reduce the bureaucracy of the government; 3) the governo...

  • Letter to the Editor - See Havre High School play "Tarzan"

    Updated Nov 13, 2017

Editor, Wow! We attended “Tarzan” Saturday night at Havre High School with hopes of being entertained for a few hours — but what we experienced was way beyond what we would expect from a high school production. The set itself was extraordinary — with full rain forest effects. The entire cast was incredible, including the costumes, and the orchestra. The singing and acting created a sense of being at a professional performance - not a high school production. Tarzan and the apes were swinging across the stage on vines in the...

  • "Great American Smokeout: It's never too late to quit

    Updated Nov 13, 2017

The average adult takes 15 to 20 breaths a minute — more than 20,000 per day, according to the American Lung Association. Healthy lungs are important to deliver clean air to our bodies’ organs and tissues, which convert oxygen into fuel to support vital body functions. When a smoker lights up, it affects not only the health of the lungs, but also the body structures that depend on the lungs for oxygen. Smoking is the leading cause of preventable disease and death, claiming the lives of more than 440,000 adults in America eac...

  • Hopefully Legislature can find compromise that will help everyone

    Updated Nov 13, 2017

I had planned a follow-up on the fun times Judy and I have had in the last little bit. But, as you have heard and read, Montana’s Governor has called for a Special Session, which is set to start Nov. 14. The scope he proposed is limited to what was suggested to fix the $228M budget shortfall, which came about, in part, from the most expensive fire season in Montana state history. Some of the proposed cuts to departments are from 4.5 percent to 10 percent, depending on the Governor’s priority. The Republican leadership has als...

    Updated Nov 13, 2017

MISSOULA (AP) — Freshman quarterback Gresch Jensen showed no rust and Montana's defense had little mercy in a 44-14 win over Northern Colorado Saturday. Jensen threw for three touchdowns and ran for another, and the Grizzlies intercepted five passes while closing out their home schedule at Washington-Grizzly Stadium. Jensen, returning to the lineup after a concussion kept him out of Montana's 17-15 win over Northern Arizona last week, broke a 7-7 tie with a 6-yard pass to M...

  • Yotes stop resilient Lights

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 13, 2017

The Montana State University-Northern Lights started fast in their final game of the 2017 Frontier Conference season. Ultimately though, the Lights couldn’t keep up with the College of Idaho Yotes — the hottest team at the end of the Frontier season. Saturday in Caldwell, Idaho, the Yotes brought a long season for Northern to an end with a 45-22 win at Simplot Stadium. The win meant the Yotes finished with their first winning season since joining the Frontier four years ago...

And in the early minutes of the non-conference game inside the Armory Gymnasium, MSU-N delivered a knockout punch, opening the game on a 36-5 run and eventually winning easily, 107-62. The win improved Northern's record to 3-0 on the young season. MSU-N will be back in action Friday on the road against Oregon...
