  • As governor I will protect our public lands

    Updated Jul 17, 2020

I’ve spent my career fighting for our public lands, and I have a track record of delivering results for Montanans. Growing up in Montana shaped who I am and the values I carry with me. Like many Montanans, I know how lucky we are to spend time outdoors on our public lands — hunting, fishing, hiking and camping — making long-lasting memories with friends and family. Generations of Montanans have fought to protect our public lands, rivers and streams. That fight continues to this day. We need to be clear-eyed about the threa...

We then arrange delivery to the local food banks. Since we began this program, we have p...

  • Fort Belknap Water Compact good for the Hi-Line

    Updated Jul 17, 2020

Putting water to beneficial use in a semi-arid state like Montana is dependent on two truths. Water must be physically available, and the corresponding truth is that there must be a legal right to use that available water supply. As the recent failure of Drop 5 on the St. Mary/Milk River Diversion system and the impending lack of adequate supplies in the Milk River later this summer make clear, the infrastructure to make the physical delivery of that water must be rebuilt and repaired. We must be thankful that the irrigators...

  • View from the North 40: It's a land-locked pirate's life, if ye seek it

    Pam Burke|Updated Jul 17, 2020

I know what you’re thinking, because I’ve been thinking it, too: What this pandemic — and, frankly, all of 2020 — needs is a good old-fashioned treasure hunt. Someone already found the $1 million treasure stashed “somewhere” in the Rocky Mountains by art dealer, author, multi-millionaire and part-time oddball Forrest Fenn. He hid that treasure more than a decade ago, and June 6 he announced someone had finally gleaned the location from his writings and they claimed the prize....

  • Northstars storm past Lightning, twice

Needless to say, Havre accomplished that goal, putting them in a good spot as the regular season starts to draw...

  • Roping Religion: Remember to say, 'Thanks'

    Updated Jul 17, 2020

Many of the ideas and scriptures for this article are from the devotional “God Wants You To Win!” by world champion calf roper Jeff Copenhaver. God has given us everything to enjoy. Our instruction is to seek first His kingdom and His righteousness. If you have ever competed, you may know both the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat, as the old television commercial proclaimed. Jeff’s devotional talked about his drawing a calf that had not been tied in the allotted time before. Rodeo legend Roy Cooper was injured just...

  • Pastor's Corner: Remember a day of rest

    Updated Jul 17, 2020

If there had been no pandemic, I would have found myself preparing for vacation bible school next week. Instead, I find myself on vacation this week. When this newspaper hits the stands, I expect that I will be on the highway with my family, returning from Whitefish with stops at the Dinosaur Trail museums in Bynum and Choteau planned as a slight detour off the fastest route. For a while this spring, it didn’t look like that trip might be possible. It is a blessing to find rest after the recent weeks and months of our world b...

  • Out Our Way: Bankrupt farmers and ranchers - Luke 10:25-37

    Updated Jul 17, 2020

Out our way, we know ranching and farming are not 9 to 5 jobs. They are not profession for the weak or lazy but require constant attention. Now and then, we hear of a farmer or rancher who goes bankrupt. Often it is for reasons that simply cannot be helped — but now and then it is because the farmer or rancher got lazy. Charlie and I rode fence because barbed wire, as strong as it is, can come loose. Cattle rubbing against the fence posts can loosen them and the wire goes slack. Over time, the post falls and the cattle w...
