When I was about 15 years old a friend of my family rode his 10-speed bicycle on a 330-mile road trip from Salmon, Idaho, to our home in northwest Montana and then home again — a 660-miles that took about a week each way, averaging something under 50 miles per day. I remember admiring that he even conceived of doing such a t...

  • Havre Northstars rose up this summer

    Chris Peterson|Updated Jul 26, 2019

The 2019 Havre Northstars American Legion baseball team didn't necessarily achieve everything it set out to do this past season. But even so, there is no doubt that the Northstars took a big step in the right direction following a 24-20 campaign that saw them finish fourth in the Northern A District regular-season standings. More importantly, Havre also notched just its second win at the district tournament in the last six seasons, which was another sign of progress. "We did...

  • Out Our Way: The cowboy's journal

    Updated Jul 26, 2019

Out our way, most folks know that a cowboy’s hat is not an affectation, but a statement of who the owner is. Buying a new hat at the ranch wear store is like buying a blank journal. The pages are blank at first, but in time the book is filled. At first the hat, like the new journal, tells nothing of the owner. It has no personality or story to tell at first. But over time, it becomes the working cowboy or cowgirl’s signature. The rain, snow, wind and heat all leave their mark as do the various scrapes and bruises every rid...

That day is also Tell an Old Joke Day; we probably all know a few old jokes. Coming up the 25th is Threading the Needle Day. We were pretty young, way back...

The use of SUPs has exploded in Montana over the past few years. And while the vessels are fun and easy to use, many people don’t realize that SUPs have equipment requirements, just like other vessels.
