  • Out Our Way - Charlie on the Ridge

    Updated Aug 2, 2019

Out our way, especially when I was just learning to cowboy with Charlie, I was confused by all the various cattle trails that crisscross the Tiger Ridge area. More than once I found I had been following the wrong trail and there as nothing for it but to turn around. Usually Charlie was up on a ridge or somewhere pointing me in the right direction. I still had to do a fair amount of backtracking, but found the right trail and got to where I had been trying to go. Sadly, not all folks have a Charlie to call them back to the...

  • Pastor's corner: Relational God

    Updated Aug 2, 2019

The Word of God teaches us to love the Lord your God and to love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22: 37-39). Love is the thread that ties the narrative of Scripture together — God’s unconditional and radical love for us and the witnesses of believers throughout centuries who are striving, and failing, to love as we have been loved. Furthermore, Scripture commands us to love just as God has loved us (John 13: 34-35). This tells us the importance of the quality of our relationships. We are not just to love when we feel...

  • Hello, God. It's me, Mara

    Updated Aug 2, 2019

You know, Lord, if we’re not getting our share of happiness and success out of life, maybe we ought to try these on for size — source unknown — just sharing. First: Realize that we’re put on earth for a purpose. We’re not just born, we can find our purpose, Faith in self, and work toward the mastery of it; then we’ll find happiness and success. We need to learn the purpose for our life as early as we possibly can. Second: Adopt a positive attitude in our daily living, always believing that the best is about to com...

  • Grief Poem - Hold on

    Updated Aug 2, 2019

“Hold On! Hold On”! That’s what “they” say to those of us who grieve. We’re s’pposed to grasp this life down here, though we just want to leave.   We could pretend stars are peepholes which only “work” one way. Those gone ahead could sneak a look while we’re at work or play.   We need to make each moment count while we’re still above ground. We MISS our dear, still we hold on but someday we’re East Bound.   Our heart counts days as this world fades – we wait to see your face.  When we “come hom...

  • Medicine isn't always pretty, but it could be

    Pam Burke|Updated Aug 2, 2019

Many ancient and traditional medicinal recipes call for animal parts, but modern medicine has its share of animal ingredients, too, and I ain’t just talking about how grandma told you chicken soup would cure your cold. From bear gallbladders to tiger testicles, bird beaks to fish bladders and deer eyes to alligator skin, animal body parts in traditional medicines are believed to cure everything from acne to cancer, malaria to erectile dysfunction and phlegmy lungs to organ...

  • Wisdom and Grace: North to Alaska – Part 2

    Updated Aug 2, 2019

Last spring, I started sharing, “We’re making plans to go to Alaska this summer.” Almost unanimously the response was, “Oh, you’re taking a cruise!” To which I replied, “No. No, we’re not.” “Then you’re flying, right?” “We’re driving.” And drive we did. After resurrecting a 1988 Chevrolet long box pickup that had sat in our farmyard for 14 years, we added a popup camper and packed up. I had hoped to leave at noon Thursday, June 13, after teaching Vacation Bible School. Rod and the pickup...

  • Chris Peterson Column: It's simple, USWNT is elite and deserved to be paid like it

    Chris Peterson|Updated Aug 2, 2019

There are a lot of debates going on in this country right now and while you can argue about whether or not that’s a good thing, one discussion that needs to continue is equal pay for women. The fact women aren’t paid as well as men isn’t new. It’s been a sad fact in the United States of America for a long time and there is no better example than the United States Women’s National Soccer Team. This summer, the USWNT reminded us again of their greatness. They also reminded us how women athletes are underappreciated...
