    Updated Aug 17, 2015

HELENA (AP) — Gov. Steve Bullock has declared a fire emergency in Montana as better weather conditions Sunday aided firefighting efforts and prevented new major fire starts. Fires are burning in Glacier National Park and the Beaverhead-Deerlodge, Bitterroot, Helena, Kootenai and Flathead national forests and on the Flathead Indian Reservation. The state's biggest fire has burned nearly 21 square miles in G...

  • Smoke prompts air quality alert for southwest Montana

    Updated Aug 16, 2015

HELENA (AP) — Smoke of wildfires fouled the air in southwest Montana as firefighters continued battling dozens of fires in the western half of the state. Cooler temperatures on Saturday helped some, but most fires remained active thanks to erratic winds and little moisture. The Montana Department of Environmental Quality issued an air quality alert for counties in the southwest part of the state, including Missoula, because of smoke from large fires burning in western Montana forests and grasslands. Fires are burning in G...

After that, a myriad of medical problems led him to put down his wood-working tools until further notice. A half-made mandolin sits in his workshop, waiting for him to give it life. It will be purple when it's finished, as commissioned by his young granddaughter, who played in small cowboy boots in the yard. Stan said the first mandolin took him 400 hours to make. • View from the North 40: Ugly creature is as ugly does

    Pam Burke|Updated Aug 14, 2015

Having spent last week’s column bemoaning man’s inhumanity to the ugly creatures of the world, I must confess that my husband, John, and I are no less guilty of our own prejudices in favor of beautiful creatures. The common pigeon, for example, is quite lovely in all its variations of color and markings, but the droppings, well, I imagine some level of h...
