  • Don't be fooled about big pharmacy

    Updated Aug 16, 2019

Don’t be fooled by the current Washington rhetoric about “reforming” the pharmaceutical industry. Most recently, Sen. Chuck Grassley has been promoting his bill which would place inflation-based caps on Medicare drug prices. There are also proposals to eliminate “middlemen” and increase transparency in pricing. While these things would be an improvement, they don’t address the fundamental problem of a drug industry gone wild. Thanks to our system for granting patents for new drugs, these companies are given a virtual mon...

  • View from the North 40: Thoughts from my pretty little brain

    Pam Burke|Updated Aug 16, 2019

I was going to start this column with the eye-catching phrase: I am tired of being a woman. But that’s not true. I’m just tired of all the falderal around the status of womanhood as a whole. Are we objects like doormats or arm candy? Are we being reviled, or are we being too sensitive? Are we being paid less than men; or is it the same amount in some financial mathematics form of “separate but equal,” making that discrepancy true; or is it less because we deserve it? Are fem...

  • New Beginnings

    George Ferguson|Updated Aug 16, 2019

Jerry Wagner vowed he was going to have fun coaching the Montana State University-Northern Skylights in what is his triumphant return to his alma mater. Well, one match into the season at least, it's mission accomplished as the Skylights had a whole lot of fun in their season-opening win over Medicine Hat College Thursday night inside the Armory Gymnasium. • Pastor's Corner: Thankful for U.S.A. citizenship

    Updated Aug 16, 2019

I just returned from a vacation in Florida, where we spent time with our youngest son, who is stationed there in the U.S. Navy. While there, I spent a significant amount of time soaking in outside hot tubs. During one of those soaking times, I ended up conversing with two men about my age or older (mid-50s) about the value of U.S.A. citizenship. One man, Ivan, was an immigrant from Cuba; the other man, Pablo, an immigrant from Indonesia. When I asked them why they left their respective home countries to come to the U.S.A.,...

The league has produced some of the very best. And, as the 2019 Frontier football season draws...

  • From the Chaplain: The value of senior ministry

    Updated Aug 16, 2019

In September of 2018 I had the good fortune of becoming the chaplain of Northern Montana Health Care. My duties are primarily in the Northern Montana Care Center, the long-term care facility. In my 31 years of pastoral ministry I didn’t get as involved with nursing home ministry, largely because my churches tended to be younger. Coming to the Care Center is a new chapter for me. I have found that it is a good fit for me at this time in my career. As such, I want to encourage others — pastors and lay people alike — to consi...

  • Hello, God. It's me, Mara.

    Updated Aug 16, 2019

You know, Lord, it was surprising to discover that some of us have incorrect blinking habits. There are even exercises designed to develop correct blinking so that the fluid movement of the eye lids prevents dry eyes. That’s when “time” or seconds become real. One learns correct blinking as in: relax, close eyes, count three seconds, open eyes, count two seconds, repeat. Another exercise is: shut eyes, flutter the lids but don’t open your eyes, flutter and count slowly to 100. The Devotional’s Daily reading told about the...

  • Out Our Way: You called, Lord? - Luke 5:32

    Updated Aug 16, 2019

Out our way, “Pride goeth before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18) is not mere Bible thumping but a reality every cowhand knows. Some can learn it from wise older hands and some of us have to learn it by hard knocks. I fear I have been in the latter category far too often. Somehow, riding at full gallop and thinking myself a tried and true cowboy has too often ended up with me tossed from the saddle and hitting hard ground. Yes, I can ride. Yes I have cowboyed for several years — but no, I am not a good rider nor an accom...
