  • Hi-Line Living: Bringing balance with bees

    Paul Dragu|Updated Aug 26, 2017

Honeybees are the only insects that produce food for humans - food that never spoils. This factoid, among others - honey is the only food that includes all the substances needed to sustain life - is commonly cited by beekeepers. Beekeepers, large and small, are a passionate bunch. Clay Vincent, who has had bees for about four years, is one such ardent Havre-area beekeeper. Vincent is the city sanitarian and, admittedly, a former advocate of a city ordinance to prohibit people...

  • Celebrating History: Celebrating diversity in Havre

    Updated Aug 25, 2017

With the heat, the Chautauqua just ending, harvest still in full swing and the upcoming Labor Day weekend, there really wasn’t much in The Havre Plaindealer’s Aug. 25, 1917, issue. Wheat crops were paying well, but warnings were issued to safeguard next year’s crop due to the war effort. One of the things I love most about the Havre area is the incredible diversity of its citizens. People from all over the world joined American Indians whose ancestors had lived here for centuries to create the largest and greatest city on Mo...

  • From the North 40: Conundrum: Both to object and serve

    Pam Burke|Updated Aug 25, 2017

I suppose it’s a form of oppositional defiance disorder, a compulsion to both stick it to The Man and not become a The Establishment that makes me shy away from things labeled as “your duty” and “your responsibility.” I see it in statements that include word combinations like “have to” and “need to.” Many times my mouth says “yes,” while my brain is saying “nope.” I’ll do what I agreed to do, while my brain is still at it with “Nopity. No.” It’s a backward and unhealthy w...

  • Hello God. It's me, Mara

    Updated Aug 25, 2017

You know, Lord, many folks enjoy solving puzzles. Some individuals prefer simple ones to solve while others really enjoy a tough brainteaser. Some workplaces have a waiting room; it was interesting to glance around, observing for a moment, several folks reading papers, or some took a “Free Weekender” handout issue that included puzzles. Some with pen in hand, started to work. It was fun to glance up and notice. Later, a friend shared an interesting book puzzle. Now that one was a challenge, but we tried. Thankfully she had...

  • Out Our Way: Along the Covenant Trail with Goliath

    Updated Aug 25, 2017

Out our way, life can be pretty basic and easy. Goliath and Babe have their own pasture to play in, and plenty of feed and water. On the other side of the fence is a horse farm where the horses have many more acres to run in - nicer facilities and even an outdoor training section. Yet though these other horses have more than Goliath, I have never seen Goliath envy them. He has what he needs and if others have more, well, bully for them. We call that horse sense, and it is a go...

With 12 teams and two sub-divisions, the conference is not...

  • Lights QB Battle: Who will it Be?

    George Ferguson|Updated Aug 25, 2017

And it's certainly been one of the main attractions during the Montana State University-Northern Lights' fall camp, which ends with a preseason scrimmage today. Unlike most quarterback battles, though, where just one or two guys have a big lead, the Lights have had four players competing for the vacant starting job since spring ball began last...
