One of three ferries left in Montana sits on the Missouri River 16 miles north of Winifred. Tom Philp has been one of the two employees running the Stafford-McClelland Ferry for four years. “Greatest job in the world,” Philp said. “It’s a pretty simple operation to run.” Philp said he has shuttled around eight cars a day across the river on average this year, which he said has been pretty slow. “Some days, you can get up to 20 cars,” Philp said. In June, 2013, the ferry was... Full story

    Updated Sep 8, 2013

Laurel —Childhood obesity is a growing problem. Young folks along the Hi-Line are no exception. Lack of exercise and poor diet are the two main reasons. Havre schools and several others along the Hi-Line have initiated efforts to provide healthier breakfasts and lunches while keeping the food tasty and appealing to young people. This is a worthwhile effort in which the United States Department of Agriculture provides financial incentives to the school districts. Laurel —Patty Brannigan has reopened a Havre institution, the Fr... Full story

  • Blue Ponies and Miles City tie after lightning delay

    Updated Sep 6, 2013

The Havre High football team got off to a great start Friday night against the Miles City Cowboys. The Blue Ponies scored on their opening possession of their home opener when Dane Warp hooked up with Thomas Gruber for a 21-yard touchdown. However, Havre never got a chance to find out if it was going to be able to pull the upset. Miles City tied the contest at 6-6 in the second quarter, then, minutes into the second half, the teams were pulled off the field due to lightning in the area. As the storms intensified, and with no... Full story

    MATTHEW BROWN Associated Press|Updated Sep 6, 2013

BILLINGS (AP) — Montana's Supreme Court has ordered a judge to cancel a Friday resentencing hearing for a former teacher who got 30 days in prison for raping a 14-year-old student. Justices say Judge G. Todd Baugh does not have authority to reconsider the sentence he gave to former Billings teacher Stacey Rambold. Baugh was widely criticized for the Aug. 26 sentencing and for saying the victim was "older than her chronological age." He has since sought to backtrack, apologizing for his comments and attempting to r... Full story

  • Judge pursues resentencing hearing for rapist

    MATTHEW BROWN Associated Press|Updated Sep 6, 2013

BILLINGS — A Montana judge appeared intent on trying to undo his lenient sentence for a teacher who raped a student, even as prosecutors pressed the state Supreme Court on Friday to stop him until their appeal is resolved. A resentencing hearing was planned later in the day for Stacey Rambold, 54, who pleaded guilty to one count of rape in April. An emergency petition from the state attorney general's office to block the resentencing was pending before the state Supreme Court after being filed at close of business T...

After an 0-1 start to the new football season, the Havre High Blue Ponies are looking to get into the win column in week two. And senior middle linebacker Jake Williams could be crucial to just how much success the Central A Ponies have this season. Last season, the Ponies finished with a 4-5 record and as the No. 3 seed in the conference. But another run into the state playoffs was upended with a tough loss, this time to Laurel. Moving forward, the Ponies are looking to move... Full story

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 6, 2013

The Havre High boys and girls golf teams are already nearing the halfway point of the 2013 season. Since school started just last week, that’s strange to say, but the golf season is already getting into the stretch run. That run continues today for the Blue Ponies, who are back at the East Glacier Lodge Golf Course playing in the Browning Invitational. Havre just played last Thursday in browning, with both Blue Pony teams finishing first in a varsity-only event. Today’s tou... Full story

  • Havre High cross country teams debut

    Daniel Horton|Updated Sep 6, 2013

A team or athletic program always learns a lot about itself after finally getting the opportunity to compete against other programs or athletes, and as the first-year head coach of the Havre High cross country teams, Darci Heninger will surely know a lot more after this weekend. Heninger and the Central A Blue Ponies have already had a solid off-season, but there is no doubting their excitement to run against somebody else outside of practice. The Ponies will get that... Full story

  • Lights headed for a showdown with Saints

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 6, 2013

The Carroll College Fighting Saints marched into Havre in a highly-anticipated season-opening game with the Montana State University-Northern Lights last August, and the Saints marched right back to Helena with an emphatic 31-6 win. The victory didn’t catapult the Saints to a successful season, as Carroll wound up slipping to a 7-4 year, missing the NAIA playoffs and not at least sharing the Frontier Conference title for the first time in 12 seasons. The loss, did however, s... Full story

  • Skylights back on the road

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 6, 2013

Frontier Conference play is still a week away, yet it’s already been a long road for the Montana State University-Northern volleyball team. And the Skylights are back on that road Saturday. Northern, which just returned from a four-match weekend in Florida, will play a pair of NCAA Division II schools in the University of Mary and Minot State University as part of the UGF/Carroll Tournament Saturday in Great Falls. And though it’s a short trip, compared to back-to-back tri... Full story

Havre High has conference rivals like the Livingston Rangers and Belgrade Panthers in nearly every sport, but now that the Blue Pony football team is running into the Miles City Cowboys seemingly every year, a thrilling nonconference rivalry has also grown in football. But the Cowboys have had the Ponies’ number over the least half of a decade, something the Ponies would like to change tonight in their home debut. Tonight at 6, the Ponies and Cowboys will meet at Blue Pony Sta... Full story

  • The case for CASA

    Beth Baker|Updated Sep 6, 2013

One of my favorite fall sounds comes from the school playground a block from my house. If I am lucky enough to be home during recess, I hear the laughter of dozens of children — unfiltered joy filling the autumn breeze. This inspiring sound is being heard in neighborhoods across Montana as another school year begins. We hope each child is returning rejuvenated and eager to learn, with new school clothes and a backpack containing freshly sharpened pencils and a healthy lunch. Sadly, it is far from the truth for many Montana c... Full story

  • Money spent on preventing health problems pays off

Alicia Thompson and Danielle Golie|Updated Sep 6, 2013

Over the past few years, there’s been a push in this country to use our health care dollars more wisely. One way to do that is to shift the focus of our health care spending from treating disease to preventing it. We could save millions of dollars — and millions of lives, too. But that isn’t the direction our leaders are taking. Since 2010, Congress has significantly cut the budgets of public health agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Health Resources and Services Administration. It has not... Full story

Attack of the Fry-scraper Some folks in London are muttering a new saying: “If you can’t stand the heat, demolish the new skyscraper causing it.” Originally dubbed the “Walkie-Talkie” for its unique shape, London’s newest skyscraper, nearing the end of construction, has earned the new names of “Walkie Scorchie” and “The Fry-scraper” because its concave face catches and reflects sunlight in a way that it focuses the light into a burning beam of solar rays — in much the same... Full story

  • Havre of the past: School starts in 1898

    Emily Mayer|Updated Sep 6, 2013

We continue this series celebrating Havre’s 120th anniversary in 1898, as for some reason The Havre Advertiser’s corresponding issue with this week in 1893 is not available on microfilm at the Havre-Hill County Library. The following comes from The Milk River Eagle’s Sept. 2, 1898 edition. Last week’s article mentioned a reward for the apprehension of the person responsible for what was apparently an arson-set fire. Little information was contained in the reward offer,... Full story

After decades of one company providing air transportation to smaller Montana towns, the state once again has a new company set to provide Essential Air Service, the fourth in five years. Trish Lorino, marketing director for Cape Air, said this morning that many of the details — including exactly when it will take the service over from Silver Airways — still are being worked out... Full story
