The flare-up, which sparked on private land near the junction of Clear Creek Road and Sucker Creek Road in Blaine County about 2 p.m. Friday, was contained within four hours that same day, Incident Commander Don Pyrah of the Montana Department of Natural Resources and...

  • Letter to the Editor - City firefighters' on East Fork Fire

    Updated Sep 11, 2017

Editor, The Havre firefighters would like to thank everyone for their extraordinary efforts with the East Fork Fire. The generosity of this community was an amazing thing to see. We offer a differing explanation to what we have been hearing from the public about the Havre firefighters and why we did not respond to this fire. A Hill County water tender and a command unit from the Havre Fire Department responded to the fire, operated by the HFD chief and assistant chief, however, the firefighters were not requested by HFD...

  • Letter to the Editor - Tell FWP to suspend hunting season

    Updated Sep 11, 2017

Editor, I wrote this letter to the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks. I ask you to do the same. Dear Montana FWP, I am writing to ask that you close the 2017 hunting season until there is sufficient rain or snow across our state to alleviate the dry conditions. Make no mistake; I am an avid deer and elk hunter. Like many Montanans, I look forward to our hunting season every year and I even drew a cow elk tag for the Bears Paw Mountains this season. This year, however, we are in a precarious situation with our drought,...

  • The choice: Either we manage the forests or they will manage us

    Updated Sep 11, 2017

Montana’s crisis isn’t too much water or hurricanes — it’s fire. It’s smoke filling Big Sky Country and filling our lungs, communities being evacuated, structures lost and tons of fuels just lying on the forest floor waiting for a spark to ignite. In this year alone, over 1,600 fires have burned over 1 million acres in Montana — that’s nearly equivalent to the entirety of the state of Delaware being on fire. We are tired of being told that others know better than us while we watch our forests and grasslands burn every su...

Buoyed by a second-place finish from Kadia Miller, as well as two other Top-10 finishes, the Havre girls took home the team title with 56 points, finishing just ahead of Glasgow, which had 60. • Pony golf teams post good scores at Lewistown Invite

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 11, 2017

There's no more time off for the Havre High golf teams, and the 2017 Central A divisional tournament will be here before the Blue Ponies know it. After a week off, the Ponies returned to the golf course Friday as they took part in the Lewistown Invitational held at Pine Meadows Golf Club. The 18-hole tournament featured Havre, Lewistown and Browning, as well as a host of players from the area. And the Ponies of head coach Brett Gilman showed little sign of rust. The Havre...

Havre, which was in the CMR group during pool play, finished eighth out of eight teams, following a 0-6-1 record in group play. Saturday, in the single-elimination phase of the tournament, th...

  • Skylights wrap up non-conference play with sweeps in Great Falls

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 11, 2017

Just like that, Frontier Conference play is here. And the Montana State University-Northern volleyball team is going into league play with plenty of momentum. Northern wrapped up its non-conference schedule with two wins at this past weekend’s University of Providence Tournament in Great Falls, as the Skylights swept both Benedictine-Mesa and NAIA power Dickinson State. The wins improved MSU-N’s overall record to 6-8 heading into Thursday’s Frontier opener at Rocky Mount...

  • Pony Extra: HHS has time on its side

    Chris Peterson|Updated Sep 11, 2017

Sitting at 0-3, things look a little bleak right now for the Havre High football team as far as the Eastern A playoff picture is concerned, but the reality is, things are so wide open, the Blue Ponies aren't out of anything just yet. Certainly, the Ponies will need to play better than they have in recent weeks. But losses to Lewistown (2-1) and Laurel (3-0), two teams that look like locks for the playoffs, is nothing to be ashamed of. Right now, looking at the Eastern A...

  • MSU-N Notebook: A very bright Light is emerging

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 11, 2017

Saturday was not an easy day for the Montana State University-Northern Lights. In their home-opener, one of the best teams in the NAIA, and a legitimate contender for the national championship, the Montana Tech Orediggers, showed the Lights how far they still have to go. But, the Lights, Saturday, and through two games, have also showed plenty, in a lot of different areas. And one of those areas is the passing game, which has been very good under junior college transfer Tommy...

  • Laurel steams through Blue Pony Stadium

    Chris Peterson|Updated Sep 11, 2017

The Havre High football team has yet to win a game this season, but Friday night against Laurel, head coach Ryan Gatch still felt his team took a step in the right direction. He felt that way, even if the scoreboard didn't necessarily agree, as the Locomotives downed the Blue Ponies 42-21 at Blue Pony Stadium Friday night in an Eastern A Clash. "I know that we lost by 21 points, but we are getting close," Gatch said. "I am extremely proud of this team's effort. I thought all t...

  • Digging Machine: No. 6 Orediggers 70, Lights 27

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 11, 2017

The Montana State University-Northern Lights knew exactly what they were up against in their home opener against the Montana Tech Orediggers. And that's why the start to Saturday's Frontier Conference game inside a sweltering and smoky Blue Pony Stadium was so exciting. On just Northern's second play from scrimmage, junior quarterback Tommy Wilson found freshman Marvin Williams streaking up the right sideline, and with the catch in hand Williams turned the play into an...

  • George Ferguson Column: Even in football, don't judge a book by its cover

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 10, 2017

The title of this column says it all. And when it comes to the Montana State University-Northern Lights, and the rest of their 2017 season, it rings true. You can’t judge these Lights based on what you Saturday afternoon inside Blue Pony Stadium – at least not when looking at the scoreboard. I know the numbers, I was there. The Montana Tech Orediggers smashed a bunch of offensive school records against the Lights. They put up astronomical offensive numbers and all day, they se...
