  • Letter to the Editor: Nothing sporting about trapping

    Updated Sep 12, 2016

Editor, I am compassionate, yet realistic — my husband is a hunter and fisherman. I heard outrageous lies when approached by a trapper at his booth during a recent fair saying that animal rights people are trying to outlaw hunting and fishing and I-177 is just to get a foot in the door. The trapper bragged that he sells his services to ranchers who want to get rid of coyotes, wolves, and foxes. I asked him about the domino effect of killing these predators, i.e., being overrun with mice and voles, and he stated that he k...

  • Senior News: Wherefore Art Thou Class of 1970?

    Ila McClenahan|Updated Sep 12, 2016

Perhaps because of my own name, I’ve always been interested in names. Several years ago I was visiting with my friend Terri Magelssen. “My sister Roilene was here this summer,” she said. “Wait a minute.” I stopped her, “You have a sister named Roilene? I went to high school with a Roilene Heimbigner.” “One and the same,” Terri answered. Then she went on to tell me that Roilene often returns to Havre in the summers to visit her son Brad Holland and his family. Since the...

Unfortunately, the nationally ranked Jamestown Jimmies had other ideas. Saturday in Great Falls, the Skylights closed out the non-conference portion of their schedule with a three-set loss to the No. 23 Jimmies, by scores of 25-19, 25-12 and 25-19. The loss dropped Northern to 1-8 on the season, but, head coach Bill...

    Chris Peterson|Updated Sep 12, 2016

The Havre High volleyball team had a difficult task ahead of it this past weekend as it took part in the Electric City Classic in Great Falls. The tournament, which is hosted by both Great Falls and CMR, features mostly Class AA teams, as well as a few Class A squads like Havre and Lewistown. Havre, which played six matches Friday in pool play at the tournament, faced six Class AA squads and therefore finished with a record of zero wins, six losses and one draw. Yet, against t...

  • Orediggers run away from the Lights in the Mining City

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 12, 2016

The Montana State University-Northern Lights definitely put a scare into the Montana Tech Orediggers and their sellout crowd Saturday inside Alumni Coliseum. Unfortunately for the Lights, it was only a scare. Northern battled the Orediggers in a seven-point game for nearly three full quarters, before Tech finally took control and pulled away from the Lights for a 35-10 win Saturday afternoon in Butte, dropping MSU-N to 0-2 on the young season. The Lights got off to a disastrou...

  • Pony Extra: New stars step up in win over Cowboys

    Chris Peterson|Updated Sep 12, 2016

One of the great things about high school football is that every year, new stars emerge. And Friday night, in Havre’s 13-12 win over Miles City at Blue Pony Stadium, there were a slew of them that burst onto the scene. For all intents and purposes, at least as far as Havre is concerned, all the defining moments of the Blue Ponies’ come-from-behind win over their Eastern A rival, came in the fourth quarter. The first of those just came over a minute into the final stanza whe...

  • Comeback in the Corral

    Chris Peterson|Updated Sep 12, 2016

Sometimes, to change a football game, all that’s needed is one big play. Yet, in order to win a football game, it often takes making a few more, and Friday night at Blue Pony Stadium, the Havre High football team made just enough plays to upend Miles City. Facing a 12-0 deficit and with an offense that was stagnant for much of the game, the Ponies turned to their passing game. And quarterback Trey Murphy, along with a pair of his receivers, Michael Loftus and Isaac Warp. d...
