  • View from the North 40: Like a blessing or a cursing

    Pam Burke|Updated Oct 2, 2015

Like a wine expert, a chocolate connoisseur, an opera singer with perfect pitch, a movie sound director, an artist, a sniper, a braille speed-reader, a plush-pile inspector who runs his or her hands over soft, fuzzy fabric and says “Oh, yeah, that’s so soft and fuzzy” (it’s a job, I'm sure), like any of these people, I have a sensory gift. I hear things. If it buzzes, whirs, taps, hums, squeaks, rings, dings, grinds, taps, knocks, clicks, whistles, snaps, twangs, thumps,...

  • Pastor's Corner: Time marches on

    Updated Oct 2, 2015

Have you thought about what the world might be like in 2020? It’s less than five years away and as a wise person once told me, “Time marches on.” We can’t predict the future, but we can help prepare and guide not only ourselves but others to serve as contributing members of society. I serve as pastor of Messiah Lutheran Church in Havre and for the last three weeks the Gospel reading has Jesus talking about young people, specifically young children. In the gospel of Mark Jesus says, “Whoever welcomes one such child in my nam...

  • Pastor's Corner: A longing fulfilled

    Updated Oct 2, 2015

"Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life." — Proverbs 13:12 As a longtime Dallas Cowboys fan, I have enjoyed great seasons and terrible seasons over the past 45 years of watching and cheering on my team. I became a fan of the Cowboys when I was 6 or 7 years old and watched the Thanksgiving Day game with my cousin who is also a huge fan of Dallas. These were the days when Tom Landry coached the team. His motto was God, family, and football. My favorite player was Roger Staubach. E...

  • Skylights seeking a win at UM-Western

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 2, 2015

The schedule has been an unusual one so far for the Montana State University-Northern volleyball team. First, the Skylights were on the road for four straight weeks. Then, they got to play their first four Frontier Conference matches at home. Now, the schedule takes another strange quirk as the Skylights play just one match this weekend, and when that match is over, they won't play again until Oct. 15. And tonight's road match, the first of conference play for Northern (0-4,...

  • Griz, Cats look to build momentum

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 2, 2015

It’s back to the road for the Montana State Bobcats and Montana Grizzlies. And both are facing tough, but winnable, games this weekend. The Bobcats (1-0, 2-1) are riding high after an impressive 45-28 win over then No. 20 Cal Poly last Saturday in Bozeman. Now, No. 11 MSU will travel to take on arch rival Northern Arizona (0-1, 2-2) Saturday afternoon in the Walkup Skydome. And, head coach Rob Ash’s squad will have to avoid an obvious trap game on the road, in a place the Cat...

  • Blue Ponies ready to race at home

    Chris Peterson|Updated Oct 2, 2015

There is nothing quite like homecoming weekend for any high school sports program. But when it comes to the Havre High cross country teams, it means even more because it serves as the Blue Ponies’ only home meet. The Havre Invitational, which will feature a number of teams from along the Hi-Line as well as Lewistown and Browning, will give both Pony teams a chance to run in front of their hometown fans for the first time this season. The meet, which will get underway S...

    Chris Peterson|Updated Oct 2, 2015

While many Havre High sports fans are looking forward to homecoming athletic events, the Blue Pony volleyball team got the sports weekend started early Thursday in Great Falls. Unfortunately for the Ponies, their week of matches did not begin the way they wanted as they were swept by the Great Falls High Bison by the scores of 25-21, 25-20 and 25-19 at Swarthout Fieldhouse. The loss drops Havre to 5-5 on the season, while the Bison improved their overall record to 4-11. Havre...

  • Nationals play Americans tonight

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 2, 2015

The season is young, but the Glacier Nationals junior hockey team will have a big test this weekend. Tonight, the Nationals play host to the Great Falls Americans inside the Havre Ice Dome, and the game will tell a lot about where the Nationals are at. So far, Glacier has struggled defensively in a 0-4 start to the season, and they'll be tested by a tough American's attack tonight. Glacier started the season by falling to both the Americans and Helena Bighorns two weeks ago....

  • Rangers come to HHS's homecoming

    Chris Peterson|Updated Oct 2, 2015

With only five teams in the Central A conference and only four conference games, each one of them is important. That’s why tonight’s game against Livingston means so much for the Havre High football team — that, and it’s homecoming. The small conference schedule means the Blue Ponies (3-2, 1-0) have little room for error. So when they take the field tonight at Blue Pony Stadium at 7, they can’t afford to letdown, despite entering the game as heavy favorites. “We just need t... Full story

  • Friday Night Lights: Utility Man

    Chris Peterson|Updated Oct 2, 2015

Winning football games is often about making sacrifices. And when it comes to the Havre High football team, no one has made more sacrifices than Chris Gabrielsen. Gabrielsen, who is in the midst of his junior season for the Blue Ponies, is a two-way starter for HHS. Yet that isn’t what makes him unique, there are others on the team that play both ways and do so with little complaint. The thing that makes Gabrielsen different is the fact that due to team needs, he has started g...
