A tractor pulled a trailer with people sitting on bales of hay, waving at anyone in the neighborhood or even at Father Daniel Wathen, St. Jude Thaddeus Church pastor, who lives across from the school. Other activities were held in the pumpkin patch itself. The Pumpkin Patch, a St. Jude Home and...

  • Letter to the Editor - Vote no on the 6 mill levy

    Updated Oct 22, 2018

After decades of supporting the Montana 6 mill levy, I’ll be voting no this November. Here are but two of many reasons: By and large most institutions of “higher learning” seem to be losing their way. Political correctness, lower academic standards, poor graduation rates, useless degrees, ever higher student debt and frivolous spending, the diversity delusion and a group-think atmosphere indicate “higher” education is headed the wrong way. No longer allowing the past to inform and guide the present, it colors the past to f...

  • Letter to the Editor - Sick of politics

    Updated Oct 22, 2018

Editor, I have “politic-iris!” I am so tired of hearing all the promises you politicians have. I know it’s a free country — freedom of speech, etc. — which is a true blessing. Each day, I receive a letter from children across the country begging for food. Why don’t you politicians spend your money on children of the world, food, clothing? How about hurricane victims? No homes, food, clothing or anything. Please help these people and save your millions for something more constructive. You will be blessed and perhaps att...

  • For Montana Indians, there is only one choice for U.S. senator

    Updated Oct 22, 2018

We Montanans are facing a choice of who would best represent us in the United States Senate for the next six years. While this choice is critical for everyone, it is absolutely foundational for Montana Indians. The federal government has a legal trust responsibility to Indian people, and congressional acts are the primary way of fulfilling this responsibility. Sen. Jon Tester, a third generation farmer from Big Sandy, Montana, deeply understands this and has a strong record in this regard. This is why we support Jon Tester...

  • Game Day Notebook: Lights come to play on defense

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 22, 2018

The Montana State University-Northern Lights are young on defense - extremely young. Of Northern's 11 starters in Saturday's game against the UM-Western Bulldogs at Blue Pony Stadium, nine were either freshmen or sophomores. And, for much of the season, Northern's youth on defense has shown. However, in the first 30 minutes of Saturday's tilt with Western, it was clear, the Lights are starting to grow up on defense. Western came into the game averaging a Frontier-best 37...

  • George Ferguson Column: Lights haven't turned the corner, but they've reached the intersection

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 22, 2018

When you’re rebuilding a football program, like the job being done by Andrew Rolin and the coaching staff at Montana State University-Northern, a lot of cliches are going to be used. But cliches are also true many times, and in the case of rebuilding, the cliches being tossed around at Northern right now are fully justified. After Saturday’s 42-13 loss to the No. 18 UM-Western Bulldogs at Blue Pony Stadium, there were plenty of cliche’s that came to my mind from what I saw....

  • Blue Pony Extra: Proud Havre High seniors fought to the end

    Chris Peterson|Updated Oct 22, 2018

Senior night came and went this past Friday for the Havre High football team and while things didn’t do exactly as planned, there is still a group of seniors who will walk away from Friday night and from the entire 2018 season, with some great memories. Certainly, this year’s Blue Pony football team won’t be mentioned among the greats in school history. But hey, that kind of distinction isn’t for everyone and regardless of the result, Havre never quit and a big reason why was...

  • Northern spikers play LC State tough, still fall on the road

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 22, 2018

The Montana State University-Northern Skylights haven’t won a set in Frontier Conference play this season. But, the Skylights came agonizingly close to doing that more than once Saturday afternoon. Northern was on a two-match road swing this past week, and Saturday afternoon at Lewis-Clark State, the Skylights played easily their best match of the season. In a three-set loss to the Warriors, Northern battled to scores of 28-26, 25-21 and 32-30. The match was intense from s...

  • Dawgs Bite Back

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 22, 2018

Andrew Rolin challenged his Montana State University-Northern Lights to start fast. It was a mantra he preached all week long leading up to Northern's home game with the nationally ranked UM-Western Bulldogs. It turns out, the Lights were listening to their head coach. Saturday at Blue Pony Stadium, the Lights jumped on the No. 18 Bulldogs, and eventually led 13-7 at halftime. Yet the quick start was only half the battle. In the final 30 minutes, the Dawgs scored 35...

  • Cat-Griz Report: Bobcats can't hold off Big Sky power Weber State

    Updated Oct 22, 2018

OGDEN, Utah - Montana State held a lead through 30 minutes, but Weber State scored 17 consecutive points during the second half to pick up a 34-24 Big Sky Conference football victory over the Bobcats on Saturday at Stewart Stadium. The first half was defense-oriented, with the teams combining for just 217 yards and 11 first downs. Montana State's Troy Andersen landed the stanza's first big play, a career-long 71-yard touchdown dash that gave MSU a 17-7 lead with 6:43...

  • Skylights begin 2018-19 season with a win in Great Falls

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 22, 2018

Being a young and almost brand new team, Montana State University-Northern head women’s basketball coach Chris Mouat wasn’t sure what he would see from his Skylights in their season-opener. On top of that, the Skylights didn’t know a whole lot about their first opponent either. So it stood to reason that Friday night’s game, held at the McLaughlin Center in Great Falls, would turn out to be much like any other season-opener, some good, some not so good. But in the end, th...

  • Blue Ponies race hard to the very end

    Chris Peterson|Updated Oct 22, 2018

The Havre High cross country teams joined the rest of the state at the University of Montana Golf Course Saturday in Missoula for the All-Class State cross country meet and in the Class A competitions, the Blue Ponies more than held their own. According to head coach Josh Holt, Miller was sitting back in 16th place with 400...

  • Cowboys wrangle the Ponies in Eastern A finale

    Chris Peterson|Updated Oct 22, 2018

The Havre High football team was hoping it could spring an upset on Miles City last Friday night at Blue Pony Stadium, but the Cowboys, who have been on a roll of late, would have no part of it. Miles City, who will head into the playoffs to take on Belgrade this week, cemented a 6-3 record in the regular season with a 40-14 win over the Blue Ponies on senior night last Friday. The win means Havre closed the year out with a 2-7 overall record. HHS missed the playoffs for a...
