    Paul Dragu|Updated Oct 26, 2016

A fundraiser is scheduled Thursday for RezQ Dogs, a nonprofit that rescues abused, abandoned and feral dogs from Fort Belknap and Rocky Boy's Indian reservations, to help repair Oct. 4 flooding damage caused by a fall rainstorm. Havre's Pizza Hut will donate 20 percent of the purchase price whenever someone makes an order in the name of RezQ Dogs. The money will help pay to repair damage caused by the flooding and to refurbish a shipping container that's already been bought...

  • Montana Supreme Court race could set fundraising record

    Associated press|Updated Oct 26, 2016

HELENA (AP) — The Montana Supreme Court race could soon set a fundraising record, as new reports show a state political party has contributed to the nonpartisan race for the first time in decades. District Judge Dirk Sandefur and former University of Montana law professor Kristen Juras are competing for a Supreme Court seat to replace a retiring justice. Campaign finance reports filed Monday show funding raised by the candidates or from groups spending to influence the race is just under the $1.6 million record set in 2014. T...

  • National group spends $528K to defeat brain research measure

    MATT VOLZ|Updated Oct 26, 2016

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — The National Education Association is spending $528,000 to defeat a Montana ballot initiative that would authorize the state to issue $200 million in bonds over the next decade for research into brain injuries and illnesses. The Oct. 5 and Oct. 19 contributions to the anti-Initiative 181 ballot committee Montanans for Fiscal Responsibility allows the committee to buy television and radio ads, and send mail to voters urging them to reject the measure. The ballot committee had only $600 in the bank prior t...

    Guest opinion|Updated Oct 26, 2016

Our state cannot afford to ignore the very serious brain diseases and disorders and mental illnesses that affect tens of thousands of Montanans and their families. Montanans of all ages are impacted when our loved ones are dealing with devastating diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, PTSD and depression. We strongly encourage all Montana voters to support the Montanans for Research and Cures initiative (I-181), which will responsibly fund innovative research toward treatments and cures, giving hope to...

  • Time to vote for patient's rights ... again

    Amanda Curtis|Updated Oct 26, 2016

It’s crazy to me that we have to vote for medical marijuana again in Montana, but we do. So allow me to explain how we got here, what the proposed law actually does and why everyone should vote yes on I-182. In 2004, 62 precent of Montana voters approved Montana’s first medical marijuana program, providing access to medicine for thousands of patients with serious medical conditions. In 2001, the Republican Legislature pulled one of their favorite moves — they repealed and replaced the voter-mandated law with a new syste...

  • Claims false that Hess does not support small business

    Debi Rhines|Updated Oct 26, 2016

Editor, Recent letters to the editor accuse Stephanie Hess of not supporting small business. The 2016 NFIB Voting Record shows Stephanie lined up with the NFIB choices which clearly support their mission statement — to defend the right of small business owners. Annually, I receive a guide from the NFIB called the Voting Record. It reports the state legislators’ voting record in regards to the support of small business. For those who do not know the NFIB is the leading advocate for small business owners, with offices in Was...

  • Zinke will fight for veterans

    Gianna Vanata|Updated Oct 26, 2016

Editor, As the daughter of two parents who served in the Marine Corps, I see firsthand the challenges our veterans are facing across the state. My father was deployed to Iraq following 9/11. When they moved back west, they failed to get the care they needed because of limited health care access in rural areas. Congressman Ryan Zinke has been a champion on legislation to give our heroes easy access to the care they deserve — voting for the VA Accountability Act and Women Veterans Access to Quality Care Act. My father lives e...

  • Zinke does little to represent Montana

    Dennis Kuntz|Updated Oct 26, 2016

Editor, Recently, I saw a political article that reported that Ryan Zinke was holding a lead in the race to represent Montana in the U.S. Congress. I was disappointed to see this report. Based on Mr. Zinke’s voting record and public statements, it appears that Mr. Zinke does very little to actually represent most of the citizens of Montana. His own actions demonstrate that after less than two years as Montana’s lone member of Congress he does not have much interest in representing Montana. He offered himself up to serve wit...

  • Parents need a voice

    Sharon Hummel|Updated Oct 26, 2016

Editor, As a retired teacher, I am very offended with Common Core. One of our senators explained it this way: a large package arrived from Washington. The wrappings were torn off, the package removed from the box, but little was discovered regarding the contents. Parents ask to see the tests before their children take them. The answer is no. Perhaps the no comes because the teachers are unaware of the content. A big question remains: What is being done with the data collected? There is a law in Montana that states that...

  • Hess' voting record on the state budget is rock solid

    Heidi Hill|Updated Oct 26, 2016

Editor, As everyone hopefully knows, the Montana Constitution requires that the Legislature balance its budget every session. That means that priority programs get funded to a certain level, and then the money goes to other programs or runs out. Rep. Hess knows this and she had to vote on House Bill 2, the state budget bill, and all of the proposed amendments. Amendments to HB 2 are individual legislators’ attempts to reprioritize spending. Mr. Alan “Woody” Woodwick tries to assert that Hess did not support economic devel...

  • Helena woman sues Interior Department over sexual assault

    Associated press|Updated Oct 26, 2016

KALISPELL (AP) — A Helena woman who was sexually assaulted by a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service employee while on a work trip has filed a lawsuit, saying she has been subject to retaliation and harassment in the workplace. Lockard and two co-workers were in Glacier National Park for a SCUBA diving trip at Quartz Lake in September 2015. The woman said she awakened i...

The Chinook Sugarbeeters have once again put together one of the top volleyball teams in the state at the Class C level. The Beeters, who made it all the way to the state tournament last season, are hungry to get back, and one player who will help them get there is Taylor Neibauer. Of course, Neibauer is just one of many Chinook players who contribute on a nightly basis. Along with others such as Brooke Elliot, Sierra Swank and Kelsey Mathon, Neibauer and her teammates have...

Closer and closer. That’s what the Montana State University-Northern Lights have been getting to the NAIA national championship. And with a new wrestling season about to begin, the Lights continue the climb. Northern head coach Tyson Thivierge’s team is coming off an incredible 2015-16 season — one in which the Lights finished second at the NAIA national tournament, crowned six NAIA All-Americans, swept arch rival UGF in duals and, for good measure, wrestled the Iowa Hawke...
