  • Slanting and distorting wrong and disgusting

    Jacob Bachmeier|Updated Oct 28, 2016

Editor, Let me be clear. Nasty slanting of the issues and the distorting of a person’s picture is wrong and disgusting. Saying that you would not personally do it is not enough. As a candidate for the state Legislature, I strongly condemn all ads that attempt to vilify. Both parties and individual issue groups have filled this district race with fog. Cut through that fog and look at the candidates for who they are, not what others say about them. Jacob Bachmeier Havre...

  • Women in the trades at Northern

    Alex Ross|Updated Oct 28, 2016

Emma Faus has had a passion for repairing vehicles since she was a child. When she was growing up and all throughout her teenage years in Witchita, Kansas, Faus would build or do maintenance on jeeps and motorcycles with her father and brother. A self-described gearhead, Faus said that while her interest in auto mechanics delighted her father, it irked her mother. "She didn't think I should be turning wrenches or anything like that, she wanted no part of that for me," said...

  • Practical Pastoring: Ordination Book Five

    Kevin Barsotti|Updated Oct 28, 2016

I remember parts of my ordination ceremony 20 years ago. Pastor Dan, brothers in the Lord, local pastors, elders of the Ark Church, and members of the congregation attended the ceremony. The impact of the laying on of hands and separating one for service in the kingdom is significant. The ordination confirms that you and others have heard the Lord and obeyed Him. Not everyone will be happy that you are being set in as a pastor. Carnal Christians and those with their own agenda may boycott, protest, or attempt to draw...

  • Hello God, it's me, Mara

    Updated Oct 28, 2016

In Your Holy Word, Lord, we read: "Death and life are in the power of the tongue ... " (Proverbs 18:21). We need to be more careful of what we say and how we say it. Children forever wear the bruises of words carelessly spoken by playmates, peers, parents and teachers. How they understand those words could possibly determine their attitudes and actions throughout their whole life. We surely know young or older folks who have come from a background like that, or are still in...

  • Out our Way:

    Updated Oct 28, 2016

Mark 9: 32-37 Out our way, we sometimes think that next to sheep, cows are the dumbest critters on earth. I recall a round up in which we were driving a goodly sized herd into the holding pen and things were going smooth enough - until two cows tried to go through at the same time and momentarily got stuck. Kicking, bellowing and pushing at each other, neither could move an inch. One of the Hutterite helpers inside the pen came over and smacked one cow on the nose so she...

  • Friday Night Lights: Hi-Line teams begin playoff runs

    Chris Peterson|Updated Oct 28, 2016

Right now, there are 32 Class C football teams in the state of Montana with state championship dreams still alive. This Saturday, those 32 teams will put their dreams on the line, including local teams Chester-Joplin-Inverness and North Star. The Hawks of CJI, who play in the 8-Man football division and the Knights, who play Six-Man football, are both going to be big underdogs on the road this week, but that isn't dampening their enthusiasm. CJI, which finished 5-4, will make...

  • Skylights back on the floor with Lethbridge

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 28, 2016

There have been many seasons when the Montana State University-Northern Skylights have played the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns twice. But not like this one. On Saturday afternoon, the No. 16 Skylights (2-0) will face the Pronghorns inside the Armory Gymnasium. And not only will it be the second time Northern has played Lethbridge this season, but it is also the second game of a back-to-back against the Pronghorns in Havre. Last Friday night, Northern beat Lethbridge...

  • Griz headed to high-flying EWU

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 28, 2016

Montana head coach Bob Stitt said he could see that his team was in trouble the minute it stepped foot onto the field at Northern Arizona’s Walkup Skydome last Saturday. He said his team wasn’t ready to play, and he certainly wasn’t wrong as the Grizzlies got shellacked by the Lumberjacks. Fast forward just one week, and the No. 16 Griz (2-2, 5-2) have no choice but to be ready because they have an even bigger road test than that of last week’s trip to NAU. And if the Griz are...

  • Lights brace for a road rematch with Carroll

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 28, 2016

Over the course of a college football season, things will change. And it's only in the unique scheduling of the Frontier Conference where those changes clash between two teams who have already played each other. And that will certainly be the case Saturday when the Montana State University-Northern Lights (1-6, 1-6) and Carroll College Fighting Saints (3-4, 3-4) kick off in Helena at 1 p.m. Because things have changed aplenty for the Lights and Saints since Northern shocked...

  • Nationals hits the road

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 28, 2016

The Frontier Division of the North American Tier 3 Hockey League can be a challenge. There are a number of programs with a strong junior hockey tradition and, this weekend, the Glacier Nationals will take on one of those teams in the Yellowstone Quake. The Quake, who will welcome the Nationals to Cody, Wyoming, for back-to-back games Friday and Saturday night, currently sit atop the Frontier standings. The Nationals, on the other hand, are sitting in last among the eight...

  • Skylights sink Argos

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 28, 2016

The Montana State University-Northern Skylights and UGF Argos have a big rivalry on the volleyball court. And the series is so intense that it’s rare that one team sweeps the season. The Skylights, however, pulled off that exact feat Thursday night in Great Falls. Northern thumped the Argos last month in Havre, then went to UGF’s McLaughlin Center on Thursday night and beat the Argos yet again, this time by scores of 25-22, 15-25, 25-23 and 25-19. The victory upped Northern’s...

  • Pony spikers best Browning in four

    Chris Peterson|Updated Oct 28, 2016

The Havre High volleyball team needs two wins this week to avoid a play-in match for the Eastern A Divisional, and Thursday night inside the HHS gymnasium, the Blue Ponies got the first thanks to a win over Browning in four sets. The Indians, who are winless in the Central A this year, actually won the first game of the match. Browning even threatened to win the second, but some key points by senior Naomi Terry allowed Havre to rally. The Ponies won that game and the match by...

  • Debut: Lights ready to rumble with NIC

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 28, 2016

The only opponents the Montana State University-Northern Lights have tangled with so far this fall were also wearing Northern singlets. However, that all changes Saturday night. The Northern wrestling team, led by veteran head coach Tyson Thivierge and ranked fourth in the NAIA Preseason Coaches Poll, will make its season debut Saturday night when the Lights host junior college powerhouse North Idaho College inside the Armory Gymnasium. The dual is an annual season-opening...
