Local organizer of the clinic Larry Surber said he and a group of the FFA students saw clinician Tom Curtin give this presentation in Malta. “It’s about how you handle cattle easily and make (moving them) seem like their own idea,” Surber said. The Stockmanship Clinic with experienced stockman, Curtin, and will start Tuesday at 9 a.m. in the Commercial Build...

  • Skylights ready to battle improving Tech

    George Ferguson|Updated Jan 11, 2019

In the last week, the Montana State University-Northern women’s basketball team has come oh so close to beating not one, but two NAIA Top 25 teams in Frontier Conference play. But, in narrow losses to Lewis-Clark State and the University of Providence, close was not enough. Now, the Skylights (0-5, 8-9) will turn their focus to the Montana Tech Orediggers, who come to the Armory Gymnasium Saturday night. And, Northern head coach Chris Mouat says that getting in position to win...

  • Lights put on a show in Forsyth

    George Ferguson|Updated Jan 11, 2019

The first dual of 2019 for the Montana State University-Northern Lights was going to be a big one. That's because the Lights took their show to Forsyth, the home of three of Northern's biggest stars, and one of the true hotbeds of Montana high school wrestling. And, when it was all said and done, Northern delivered a great show Thursday night, beating NCAA Division II Minot State 31-9 in front of packed Forsyth High School Gymnasium. "It was everything I hoped it would be,"...

At the midway point of its season, the Havre High boys basketball team is still trying to figure out just how good it can be, however, with a stern road test awaiting tonight in Browning, the Blue Ponies might not have to wait much longer. • Blue Ponies stave off Browning

    Chris Peterson|Updated Jan 11, 2019

Winning isn't always pretty and when it comes to the Havre High girls basketball team's 53-41 win over Browning Thursday night, there wasn't anything pretty about it. But a win is a win, especially when the win for Havre comes against a state championship contender like Browning. "Not to take anything away from anybody," HHS head coach Dustin Kraske said. "Winning by 25 doesn't teach you anything. You can play with bad habits and still be successful. Tonight taught us that...

  • Lights hoping to stay hot against surging Diggers

    George Ferguson|Updated Jan 11, 2019

To say the Montana State University-Northern Lights have come a long way in a short amount of time would be undercutting just what the Lights have done in the last week. After suffering a heartbreaking last-second loss to UM-Western last Friday night at home, the Lights have literally turned things around in the blink of an eye. And turning things around meant beating the No. 10 and No. 22 teams in the NAIA in a little less than 72 hours. Now, Northern comes home after...

  • Help end the use of polluting items

    Updated Jan 11, 2019

Communities across the country are implementing regulations and/or bans on items such as styrofoam, straws and plastic bags. Why are they doing that? Pretty much because it is toxic and a “principle litter” — meaning it’s everywhere. Plastic-type waste occupies a significant amount of space in our landfills. Foam and other small plastic items are easily blown by wind or washed by rain into storm drains and bodies of water. Toxic chemicals stick to the surface of these bits and birds, fish and other wildlife may ingest the foa...

  • View from the North 40: Spoiler alert: It's more gross than funny

    Pam Burke|Updated Jan 11, 2019

Fatberg, it’s like an iceberg, but made of fat. It’s a thing. You can look it up. In fact, you can look up the word definition in a 28-volume Oxford English Dictionary — which is arguably the premier authority on words in the English language — so if the OED says it’s a thing, it’s a thing. Fatberg is, in fact, a very big thing, hence its blending of the words fat and iceberg. The term for the blended words — like smog, Brexit and jakalope — is portmanteau, in case you wanted...

  • Out Our Way: The Tiger Ridge sermon

    Updated Jan 11, 2019

Out our way, folks sometimes drive down U.S. Highway 2 along the Hi-Line and remark “There’s nothing much to see.” I have had visitors make that statement to me as they pass through, but I just smile, for some of the most spectacular scenery anywhere is just a mile or two north and south of the highway. Oh, I will grant you Glacier National Park boasts of some of the most magnificent sights you can find anywhere — the “Swiss Alps with grizzly bears” — but for me it doesn’t get much better than the Tiger Ridge country where C...

  • Pastor's Corner: "A little off plumb"

    Updated Jan 11, 2019

If you were to ask anyone who knows me, they will tell you that this pastor is just a little off plumb with modern Christianity with some of his thinking and beliefs. Think about this for a moment, I believe that there is a preamble to both the greatest and the ten commandments (all of which are found in the Old Testament). That is the third chapter of Genesis, and until we can get past the third chapter of Genesis, we will never get to either the greatest or the ten commandments. So what is it about the third chapter of...

  • Hello, God. It's me, Mara

    Updated Jan 11, 2019

You know, Lord, we’re already into January but have any of us made resolutions? If that word means to make “a firm decision on something,” how come we frail humans break our resolutions as fast as we make them? Maybe we should choose more wisely? We could all stand to gain some control over our health. Your Word says in Psalms 90:10, “The days of our lives are seventy years; and if reason to strength they are eighty years, yet their boast is only labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off and we fly away.” We all like the idea...
