  • 'Learn the power of the invincible summer'

    Updated Nov 9, 2019

Historic trauma and grief play a role in everyone's lives and can greatly affect people and a community, and for many Native American communities historic trauma has a significant impact and presence, the Rev. Patrick Beretta told a group at Fort Belknap Indian Reservation this week. "The longer you don't deal with your pain, the longer it lasts," Beretta said. "If you don't deal with the historic pains of the past, the historic wounds of the past, they are going to...

  • Celebrating History: Problems for the Hill County attorney

    Updated Nov 8, 2019

By Emily Mayer The Havre Plaindealer’s Nov. 8, 1919, edition is so jam-packed with interesting articles that it will be the focus of this column for at least this week and next week, possibly more. For some inexplicable reason, the Plaindealer’s issues cease until March 6, 1920. Perhaps they didn’t publish those issues for economic reasons; perhaps they did and they’re lost to history. So, in the meantime, I will share information from the pages of the Hill County Democrat for the next few months. J. K. Bramble seems...

  • Lights take one more shot at Blue Pony Stadium

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 8, 2019

The Montana State University-Northern Lights haven't won a home game since their August 2018 win over Mayville State. A Frontier Conference win? Well, that's been even longer. But, a win is exactly what the Lights would love to give their dedicated seniors Saturday against Southern Oregon. Northern (0-8, 1-8) closes out its home schedule against the struggling Raiders (3-5, 3-6) Saturday at 1 p.m. inside Blue Pony Stadium. And, like any senior day, it will be an emotional one,...

  • Blue Ponies aim to chop down the Beavers in Dillon

    Aarron Thompson|Updated Nov 8, 2019

The Havre Blue Ponies haven't been this deep in the playoffs in four years. But the last time they were, they played the Dillon Beavers. The Ponies' next opponent now? The always high-powered Beavers. With last Saturday's thrilling playoff win over Lewistown behind them, the Blue Ponies will take on the Beavers in the Class A quarterfials Saturday at Vigilante Field in Dillon. Not only is it difficult to face off against a tough team, but so is playing that team on the road....

    Aarron Thompson|Updated Nov 8, 2019

The 2019 football season has been quite the ride for many teams, especially the Fort Benton Longhorns, who are still cruising on an undefeated record. The Longhorns have moved forward into the 8-Man quarterfinals, where they will face the Park City Panthers Saturday at home. The Panthers are 8-1 in their season. Park City is the South's No. 2 seed. In the regular season, the Panthers were electric and beat many teams including Chinook and Ennis, two teams that Fort Benton...

  • View from the North 40:Even on a good day, it's all mayhem

    Pam Burke|Updated Nov 8, 2019

“I just want my house clean enough so that if someone drops by unexpectedly, it doesn’t look like we’re six days into battling a poltergeist” — Author unknown. I don’t normally quote internet memes, but when I do it’s because the author gets me, like she’s lived my life or feels my pain or has actually read my mind. Somehow it’s winter already and the little pea- to dime-sized rocks are sticking to the dog’s feet and the soles of our shoes, so it looks...

  • Big Games: MSU-N men host DSU, visit Griz

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 8, 2019

From the time they started fall conditioning to the time they finally tipped off the regular season, the Montana State University-Northern Lights had to wait a long nine weeks. But to get to the second game of the year, Northern (1-0) only had to wait five days. Tonight in the Armory Gymnasium, the No. 10 Lights begin a new chapter in their young season when they host arch rival Dickinson State. Then, Northern heads west to play an exhibition game against easily the premier...

  • Griz, Cats fight to keep Big Sky momentum

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 8, 2019

Twelve-game seasons are rare in the Football Championship Subdivision. But, that's what the Montana Grizzlies and Montana State Bobcats are grinding through right now. And, after big wins last weekend, both teams are still very much in the hunt for a Big Sky championship. The No. 6 Grizzlies (4-1, 7-2) are a leg up on the Cats in that race, but even after an impressive road win at Portland State last Saturday, the Griz can ill-afford to trip up. Montana can also ill-afford to...

  • Argos edge Lights in round one

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 8, 2019

It's rare that a dual between the Montana State University-Northern Lights and University of Providence Argos isn't close. And the first dual of the rivalry in the 2019-2020 season was no different. Thursday night in Great Falls, the Argos struck first blood in the series with a 25-22 win over the shorthanded Lights inside the McLaughlin Center. The No. 17 Lights, of head coach Tyson Thivierge, needed a pin from Jase Stokes in the heavyweight match to tie the No. 16 Argos and...

  • Stealing the Lion's Heart

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 8, 2019

Other than head coach Chris Mouat, and two Montana State University-Northern assistant coaches, there wasn't a single Skylight basketball player that was present for Northern's heartbreaking Sweet 16 loss to Vanguard University in the 2017 NAIA national tournament in Billings. But that doesn't make the revenge Northern enacted Thursday night any less sweet. In front of an excited crowd inside the Armory Gymnasium, the Skylights knocked off the No. 10 Lions 68-56. The win was...

  • Bulldogs upset Ponies in Eastern A opener

    Aarron Thompson|Updated Nov 8, 2019

The first match of the Eastern A Divisional volleyball tournament didn't go how the Havre Blue Ponies were hoping. For the Blue Ponies Thursday's divisional opener against the Hardin Bulldogs was the first step to winning the Eastern A title. But the Bulldogs had different plans and upset the Ponies by scores 21-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-18 and 15-12. The game was certainly a shootout between the teams and in the end, Hardin kept the edge to advance in the tournament. The loss...

  • Out Our Way: No more moving! - Revelation 21:1-4

    Updated Nov 8, 2019

Out our way, I got to enjoy riding the same trails on the Tiger Ridge with Charlie. I always found something new to see and at which to marvel, but there was a sense of being home, for wherever we rode we knew where we were. There was a sense of belonging and comfort as we settled into our "home on the range." It was all familiar but never boring. There is something relaxing and comforting about being home.  Over the past few years, my son and I have done some moving - from...

  • Pastor's Corner: Prayer: Are you ready for change?

    Updated Nov 8, 2019

I remember being in a hospital room with someone I loved very, very much and I was praying — very hard. I was praying that they would be healed; they were much too young to die, but they kept getting sicker and weaker. Why didn’t God listen? Couldn’t he hear my prayers? Wasn’t I praying right? Why was the one I loved dying? What does prayer do? Does it make God aware of all that is going on? I don’t think so; God knows how everything is going to work out. Does prayer change God’s mind about how things should...

  • Hello, God. It's me, Mara.

    Updated Nov 8, 2019

You know, Lord, it might be fun to go back in time (but only for a short time) when life moved at a slower pace. We'll leave behind high speed internet, cell phones, telephones, TV, GPS and electricity.   Daily chores, back then, were milking cows, gathering eggs, cleaning coop and barn, slopping pigs, feeding bucket calves, cooking meals from scratch and, in autumn, making jams, jellies, canning fruits, vegetables and meat, making soap, making some of our clothes or...

  • MSU-N Game Day: The swagger of a playmaker

    Aarron Thompson|Updated Nov 8, 2019

Football is full of excitement, and the game often finds talented players that light up their team, as well as the opposition. Some examples include quarterbacks that can sling a pass and lead offenses to high-caliber performances, running backs that break out into the open-field or truck down a defender, or the big offensive line that get to square off with another lineman so they can protect their quarterback. But, there's a position that often catches the most attention, li...
