  • Keystone XL oil pipeline clears significant hurdle

    MATTHEW DALY Associated Press|Updated Feb 2, 2014

WASHINGTON — The long-delayed Keystone XL oil pipeline cleared a major hurdle toward approval Friday, a serious blow to environmentalists' hopes that President Barack Obama will block the controversial project running more than 1,000 miles from Canada through the heart of the U.S. The State Department reported no major environmental objections to the proposed $7 billion pipeline, which has become a symbol of the political debate over climate change. Republicans and some oil- and gas-producing states in the U.S. — as well as...

  • Stream access ruling a victory for the people

    John Gibson|Updated Jan 31, 2014

The recent ruling by the Montana Supreme Court upholding our state’s stream access law and the ability of everyone to get to streams from county roads is a victory of all Montanans and all who enjoy our public waters. It also illustrates the stark difference of views about who should get to enjoy public land and water. The case, Public Access v. Madison County, challenged a landowner’s ability to block off access to the Ruby River at three bridges used by the public for decades. James Cox Kennedy, a Ruby Valley landowner and...

  • Giants among the people

    Evan Barrett|Updated Jan 31, 2014

All of us see the world through the prism of our own experience. As I look back through that prism, I can still see, hanging on my parents’ hallway wall, three pictures — Jesus Christ, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and John L. Lewis, president of the United Mine Workers Union. These men, these giants, informed my family’s political and life perspective, and mine as well. The values of those three giants led me to a life of political and community activity based upon a belief that the backbone of America is the people — the wor...

  • The devil's earworm made me do it

    Pam Burke|Updated Jan 31, 2014

I hate to sound all hard-core, fundamentalist, evangelical religious, but it just may be true that music is the instrument of the devil. And if that’s the case, the music website Pandora.com is the devil’s stomping grounds, and the earworm — aka the song stuck in your head — is his irritating little minion. For someone like me who really enjoys music but is not an avid-enough lover of music to keep up on new artists and to actually spend money to buy music, Pandora is an amazi...

  • Our View: Hi-Line darts and laurels, January 31, 2014

    Updated Jan 31, 2014

Laurel — A new emergency generator at Havre High School is up and ready to run when needed. The generator will keep power running during a crisis. There have been several emergencies in recent years. Twice, a giant swath of the Hi-Line was left without power when NorthWestern Energy’s system failed. Other times, there have been more localized problems. The disaster in the South this week has shown the need for emergency planning. There is a need for more emergency generators. Other schools need help and many public bui...

  • History: The Hagener Science Center and Physical Plant

    Gary A. Wilson|Updated Jan 31, 2014

As a precaution, I ran my Part 5 of Northern’s Beginnings past a retired Northern professor, who found an error in the previous segment. He discovered I hadn’t spelled President Brockman’s first name correctly, and he asked why I hadn’t mentioned the Math-Science building. So I approached managing editor John Kelleher about correcting my error. Actually there were two, the other being the omission of the Physical Plant Building. Of course, he grumbled something about “this isn’t a book, you know.” But he consented if it was s...

  • Celebrating history: Student athletes, court decisions

    Emily Mayer|Updated Jan 31, 2014

There was quite a bit of news this week in 1914. Information for this article, the fourth in this series, comes from The Havre Plaindealer's Jan. 31, 1914 issue, exactly 100 years ago today. County officers throughout the state were meeting in Lewistown, and there was a lengthy article about that event. Two more lengthy articles appeared, one pleading "More Support Needed For the Success of School Athletics," and the other was the proceedings at the latest City Council...

The middle school has had cameras for years — since he started working for the school district, Carlson said. The new cameras are simply adding to the already-exceptional security system at the school. The middle school will be ca...

    Daniel Horton|Updated Jan 31, 2014

The Great Falls High Bison are big, strong, and physical, and with just one loss against them this season they are obviously also difficult to defeat. The Bison completed the season sweep over the Central A Blue Ponies with a 59-47 win in nonconference action. The loss dropped the Ponies’ overall record to a still impressive 9-4. “They (Bison) are going to make us bet...

  • Skylights nip Argos in a road thriller

    George Ferguson|Updated Jan 31, 2014

The Montana State University-Northern women’s basketball program has always been good at shooting free throws under head coach Chris Mouat. And that consistency from the charity stripe paid huge dividends in MSU-N’s most recent rivalry game with the University of Great Falls Argos. With her team trailing the Argos by one point Thursday night at the McLaughlin Center in Great Falls, junior Rachelle Bennett grabbed a critical offensive rebound with :03 left in the contest. • Lights top Argos 54-50 for the second time in six days

    George Ferguson|Updated Jan 31, 2014

When the Frontier Conference men’s basketball schedule came out last summer, Montana State University-Northern head coach Shawn Huse knew playing back-to-back games against the University of Great Falls was going to be a tremendous challenge. But even a wily veteran of the Frontier like Huse couldn’t have predicted what would transpire between the Lights and Argos over the course of the last six days. Last Friday night in Havre, Northern knocked off UGF 54-50 in a tight affair...
