  • Quick Pics - Fall falls in the Bear Paws

    Updated Nov 22, 2016

The fall, so far, has given relatively balmy weather after some early snowstorms in October. A storm predicted to dump 5 inches to 7 inches of snow in north-central Montana last week instead pushed off to the east, with Great Falls receiving some measurable snow but the Havre area receiving just a few skiffs. The forecast for the Havre area continues to be for mild weather, with no precipitation in the next few days. The Havre National Weather Service recording station at the...

    Updated Nov 22, 2016

AMY BETH HANSON Associated Press HELENA — An ethics complaint against Gov. Steve Bullock was rejected Monday for failing to offer evidence of violations and being a clear attempt to embarrass the governor as he sought re-election, the state commissioner of political practices said. The complaint alleged that Bullock and Commerce Director Meg O’Leary misused the state-owned plane by flying to a Paul McCartney concert in Missoula in August 2014 and violated ethics laws by accepting concert tickets from University of Mon...

    Updated Nov 22, 2016

BOZEMAN (AP) — A state lawmaker who was found to have accepted illegal corporate campaign contributions has appealed his $68,000 fine to the Montana Supreme Court. Republican Rep. Art Wittich of Bozeman filed the appeal Nov. 17 and posted a $105,000 bond so that he does not have to pay his fine until the appeal is complete. • Crow Agency School builds language class from ground up

    Updated Nov 22, 2016

MATT HOFFMAN Billings Gazette BILLINGS (AP) - During lunch at Crow Agency Elementary School, students hunch over the table, eating oranges. They know the Crow word for yellow - shíile - and for red - hísshe. But the second-graders struggle with other colors, like orange. "It's hard to say," Zarah Nomee said. "No, purple's hard to say," Kyler Haugen chimed in. What about blue, like their milk cartons? "That's hard to say, too," Haugen said. What about animal names? "...

  • How to survive Thanksgiving-dinner politics

    Updated Nov 22, 2016

Thanksgiving may get ugly this year. God only knows what may happen when a progressive liberal Democrat discovers he’s sitting next to a cousin or uncle who is a conservative Republican. But there’s no need for mashed potatoes to fly. In 2009, Harry Stein, an author, columnist and contributing editor to the political magazine City Journal, offered me advice on how people of differing political opinions can navigate Thanksgiving dinner. Stein, an erstwhile ’60s radical who evolved into a conservative, faced a similar dilem...

  • How Canada will get along with the Trump reality

    Updated Nov 22, 2016

TORONTO — Put aside your preconceptions about NAFTA for just a moment. And your assumptions about Canada, too. Look across the border and you’ll find that the Canadians want to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement also. Sure, Canada is skeptical of, if not downright hostile to, Donald J. Trump, who triggered a bitter belligerence in nearly every conversation here in the days following his election to the White House. But there’s nothing more important to this country than its trade with the United States, which...

  • Old 'has-bins' urge legislators to keep open minds

    Updated Nov 22, 2016

We began our service in the Montana Legislature 46 years ago when political differences were as real and sharp as they are today, but when the practice of politics wasn’t as political. Then there were old New Dealers who represented a viewpoint not unlike Bernie Sanders, and there were Barry Goldwater Republicans whose philosophy of the rugged individual would resonate with some of the Tea Party true believers of today. The similarity, though, may end there. The two of us recently invited our fellow former state l...

  • Privileged college kids don't understand real social injustice

    Updated Nov 22, 2016

When, chest puffed out with pride, my father told a law partner his first-born was accepted to Bryn Mawr College, this was the immediate response: “Isn’t that the place where they don’t shave their underarms and dance naked around the Maypole?” Daddy’s friend had it partly right: We danced around that blessed Maypole fully clothed. So when I saw this week that a bunch of Bryn Mawr students were joining forces with their Haverford counterparts and marching down Lancaster Avenue to protest the “white supremacist cops” in th...

Even people who have someone at home to help may need additional assistance to make the transition back to home successful. Northern Montana Hospital is partnering with other community hospitals across north-central Montana to help p...

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 22, 2016

MISSOULA — With the Montana Grizzlies and Montana State Bobcats coming into the 116th Brawl of the Wild at a combined 9-11 on the season, I admit, and I wrote last week, some of the excitement surrounding the annual showdown between the Cats and Griz was gone. But, after what I witnessed on Saturday in Missoula, I have to admit, I was wrong. Once again, the game between the Griz and Cats created excitement, energy and plenty of passion on both sides of the Divide. I guess, i...
