"What we've learned from experience, from other states' experiences, hunting doesn't work and, in fact, it actually makes the problem worse," Department of Livestock State Veterinarian Dr. Martin...

  • View from the North 40: I've done my stint with the fishes

    Pam Burke|Updated Nov 29, 2019

I don’t ice fish. I don’t enjoy winter enough to stand on ice watching a bobber do nothing, and I’m not a good enough drinker to sit in an ice house trying to drink that bobber under the water table. Dad used to take us ice fishing when we were kids. I don’t know how he and Mom thought it was worth it. I guess they didn’t know any better. The day started well before dawn, especially the times we were taking the snowmobile into a snowed-in lake. Dad, Mom, Brother and I would b...

    Updated Nov 29, 2019

To the editor, Havre Daily News: In an article about ridership on Amtrak’s Empire Builder passenger train featured in the Nov. 25 edition of the Havre Daily News, I am quoted as suggesting that the peak ridership for the train at 554,000 in 2008 was due to Amtrak providing enhanced equipment, amenities and promotions of the train. That 2008 ridership (actually 554,266) was up from 437,191 in 2004. The equipment, service and marketing enhancements commenced in 2005. The same article cites Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari t...

    Updated Nov 29, 2019

You remember heartfelt acts of service and look forward to frosted sugar cookies and the glow of your tree. • Out Our Way: Giving thanks - 1Chronicles 16:8-36

    Updated Nov 29, 2019

Out our way, some of the best places are the hardest to find and the most difficult to get to. I have often pitied the folk driving along the lonesome Highway 2 so intent on going somewhere else they don't see what lies all around them. A quick glance at open prairie and a few small towns and they dismiss it all saying, "There's nothing here." They've never seen the moon rise over the Sweetgrass - or the incredible rock formations that lie between distant hills. They haven't...

We perhaps should take a moment to list a few of the things that You do for us and give to us: Listing just a few, we think about such things as our life, health, food, shelter, jobs, family, friends; generally, these things are just taken for granted, they aren...
