Also the EMTs and ER staff were so kind, knowledgeable and efficient. We want you to know he is doing well now. We don’t know all of your names, but God does, and we are thankful he had you all there to help. We pray he will bless you all. Thanks again, The Reinhart Family...

  • View from the North 40: Like I said before 'meh fwote huhwts'

    Pam Burke|Updated Nov 30, 2018

My purpose here today is simply to explain to you why the tonsils are the stupidest organ in the human body. I know this comes as a shock to everyone who thinks that title belongs to the appendix but, with all due respect, that internal organ must settle for second place. Sure the appendix just sits in your belly, uselessly dangling there like a wart on the nose of the large intestine, until it gets an infection and has to be removed. Some appendixes never even bother to do...

    Derek Hann|Updated Nov 30, 2018

Open skate has been a long-standing tradition for some in Havre, spanning close to 40 years, moving to different locations until it found its present location at the Havre Ice Dome. "It gives people something to do," volunteer Kasey Shettel said. " ... Families can do it. It's nice to have something that families can do together." The Havre Ice Dome is run by volunteers and the Havre Youth Hockey Association. Shettel, who has been doing registration for hockey for two years,...

  • Celebrating History: Back from Nitro

    Updated Nov 30, 2018

By Emily Mayer In last week’s column, I mentioned about 200 Havre men who signed up to work on a government funded manufacturing plant in Nitro, West Virginia. It’s quite the story! In the Nov. 9, 1918 issue of The Havre Plaindealer on its editorial page, the Promoter printed: Join the Industrial Army, Be a patriotic worker, Help make General Pershing’s headquarters “Somewhere in Germany” instead of “Somewhere in France”. Strong, able bodied men are wanted to help the government build the fifty million dollar plat at Nitro...

And the Lights will get to do it close to home. The third-ranked Lights are in Great Falls this weekend for two seperate competitions, today's Argo Duals, and Saturday's Heritage Inn Open. • George Ferguson Column: Cats may not take Darth Vader down, but playing in Fargo in December shows just how far they've come

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 30, 2018

It's been some time since the Montana State Bobcats have been to where they'll be Saturday afternoon - into the second round of the FCS playoffs. It's been six years to be exact. The fact that the Bobcats are into the second week of the playoffs is an absolute credit to head coach Jeff Choate and the job he's done to build MSU into the type of program he wanted it to be when he was hired after the end of the 2015 season. And building that vision into a reality has, at times,...

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 30, 2018

The Rocky Mountain College Battlin' Bears are the favorite to win the Frontier Conference men's basketball title this season. But, the Montana State University-Northern Lights had a golden opportunity to deliver a season-opening statement that they shouldn't be overlooked. With less than seven minutes to play in Thursday night's Frontier opener between the Bears and Lights in Billings, Northern held a 12-point lead. Ultimately though, it got away from Northern as No. 14 Rocky...

  • Bears cage Skylights in Billings

    George Ferguson|Updated Nov 30, 2018

No question, the opening week of Frontier Conference women's basketball was going to be a difficult one for the Montana State University-Northern Skylights. After all, Northern was set to begin Frontier play on the road with games at Rocky Mountain College and Carroll College, both of which are ranked in the NAIA Top 25. The first leg of the road trip proved to be tough, as the Skylights were beaten by No. 24 RMC 65-52 Thursday night in Billings. And while Northern fell to...

  • Hello, God. It's me, Mara.

    Updated Nov 30, 2018

You know, Lord, the word “terminal” sometimes causes a bit of a shock when we think about our own life — not that any of us really ever figured that we were going to live down here on earth forever. An interesting article had a graph of weeks for us homo sapiens which generously allowed us the total number of weeks of our life on earth should we be granted the 85 years of life that we might live, should You tarry, Lord. If 18, we only have 3,484 weeks. If 28, we only have 2,964 weeks. If 38, we only have 2,444 weeks. If 48, w...

  • Out Our Way: God wears chaps

    Updated Nov 30, 2018

Out our way, there are different ways of herding cattle. I recall on one round up, Big Mike, the boss, brought some friends with four-wheeler quads to push the main herd and I suspect they managed some 200-plus head that day. But Mike knew that the quads couldn’t get to every place the cattle could, so he called on Charlie and me to ride on horseback into the arroyos, and thickets. Charlie warned me to wear chaps because some of the hawthorn thickets where pretty thick. A cow has a tough hide and often a cow/calf pair will h...
