The 25,00 acres of badlands owned by the Reddings of Rudyard has served as a field station where aspiring paleontologists go to dig for the remains of dinosaurs. The Reddings were recognized for their continued work with those in the paleontology community this October, when they were presented...

    Tim Leeds|Updated Dec 9, 2016

The Havre Salvation Army says it hopes that the warm hearts of people in the region will overcome the cold weather hitting the area and cutting into donations during its annual Red Kettle campaign. “We are really desperately hurting for both money and bell ringers,” Havre Salvation Army Social Services Director Trina Crawford said Thursday. “ … We are hoping people will be a little more generous at the kettle. • Understanding grizzly bear management: current successes, challenges

    Updated Dec 9, 2016

In some ways, 2016 will go down as a landmark year for grizzly bear management. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced its proposal to delist grizzly bears in the Greater Yellowstone Area — or GYA — after a federal court rejected a 2007 delisting rule. The grizzly population in the Greater Yellowstone Area reached its recovery goals prior to 2007 and the population continues to exceed all recovery benchmarks, as outlined by the Endangered Species Act and FWS. Recovery of grizzlies in the GYA is one of the greatest con...

  • If Virginia O'Hanlon had asked Fidel Castro about Santa Claus

    Updated Dec 9, 2016

I am 8 years old. Some of my friends say there IS a Santa Claus. Papa says, “If you see it in the Communist Party paper Granma, it’s so.” Please tell me the truth, El Presidente. Is there a Santa Claus? — Virginia O’Hanlon Dear Virginia: Your little friends are wrong. Of course there is no Santa Claus. Did your papa not tell you that I banned all likenesses of Santa, a symbol of Yankee capitalist greed, in 1959? Did your papa not read the 1959 Time article that explained how I required all Christmas decorations to be made o...

  • Volunteers make the holiday season

    Updated Dec 9, 2016

I would first like to wish everyone a very Happy Holiday Season from the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and the Chamber staff. During this time of year, many people give unselfishly of their time to make the holidays a little more special for all of us. And we are very grateful to their efforts and time. Sometimes “thank you” just doesn’t seem to be a strong enough expression of one’s gratefulness. As I proceed, you will soon see what I mean. It takes many people willing to give unselfishly of their t...

  • Public Service Announcement: I'm scared

    Updated Dec 9, 2016

During a brief stint working in public health, part of my regular tasks was to write Public Service Announcements, or PSAs, on topics related to health matters. And when I say “writing PSAs about health matters,” I mean “learning things about illnesses and the human body that have scarred me for life.” No one likes getting a cold or flu. I get that. We can build up a certain amount of resistance to the viruses by surviving illnesses as children and by being healthy in general, but we really can’t become immune to them. It...

  • Hello God, it's me, Mara

    Updated Dec 9, 2016

A friend sent a clipping (author and date unknown) on animal groups. You know, Lord, growing up on a farm/ranch, we knew animals belonged to interesting groups, but this clipping named a few more than we knew. We had pigs but didn’t know that a group of them were a “drove.” We knew baby pigs were a “litter” or “piglets.” We had a “flock” or a “brood” of chickens and that daily we’d gather a “clutch of eggs.” We knew several fellows called “drovers,” the guys who’d move a “herd of cattle” or a “flock of sheep” in a certain dir...

  • Practical Pastoring: More on Ordination Book Five

    Updated Dec 9, 2016

In Book Five I continue to share Pastor Dan’s update letters to give you some insight into possible family issues you may face as you obey the Holy Spirit. Dan and Judy’s children wound up in three different schools in one semester. I know that God’s grace is sufficient, but I want to point out the cost that your family will have to bear as you say yes to God. Don’t worry; His plans are for good for your wife and children, as well as for you. However, there is a significant cost to saying yes to God. He will be a debtor...

  • Out Our Way:

    Updated Dec 9, 2016

Mark 10: 28-31 Out our way, it sometimes happens that a calf will lose it's mother and be adopted by another cow. Though the mom and her natural calf may be black angus and the adopted calf a red angus, both calves are brothers. You see that same bonding with horses - even when not raised together, sometimes they are still family. I recall Charlie and I checking cows and I was riding one oh his horses instead of Goliath. Now goof-ball was called Freckles and his buddy was...

  • HHS girls go east to open the season

    Chris Peterson|Updated Dec 9, 2016

Like many teams across the state, the Havre High girls basketball team will open its season this weekend. But this year, Havre will play its first two games in Sidney, where the Ponies will play Sidney, the host team of the girls Central/Eastern A Tip-off Tournament, t...

    George Ferguson|Updated Dec 9, 2016

Success has never been an issue for the Havre High swimming program. Year after year, the Blue Ponies always seem to be strong in the pool. And, though HHS has a new head coach this winter, the Ponies will most certainly continue their tradition of excellence. William Kilgore, who was Havre’s assistant last season, takes over for Jill Cammon as head coach of the Blue Pony program. And with a number of strong returning swimmers, and good overall numbers, Kilgore says things a...
