  • Havre Nice Day: Long walk, short drive

    Derek Hann|Updated Dec 10, 2018

The other day, I had an unusual conversation with a gentleman, and the nature of that conversation stuck with me. I was driving on U.S. Highway 2 when I stopped for a man who asked for a ride to Rod’s Drive In. Once he had gotten into my vehicle, I asked him if he would need to be picked up after he was finished eating. He simply replied, “No, I’ll walk.” I then asked, “Are you sure, sir? It’s cold out; it’s really no trouble.” “I like to walk,” the gentleman said. “Gives time to think, lets the mind wander. Meditating.” I lo...

  • Payback: Skylights crush Blue Hawks

    George Ferguson|Updated Dec 10, 2018

Revenge might not have been the motivating factor ahead of the Montana State University-Northern Skylight's Sunday matinee in the Armory Gymnasium. But that emotion didn't hurt either. In front of a big afternoon crowd in Havre Sunday, the Skylights avenged a November loss to the Dickinson State Blue Hawks, and they did it in style, blowing out DSU 71-47 in the first game of the two-day Duck Inn Corporation Classic. The win was Northern's second straight, pushing their record...

After all, the Lights were coming off two very tough road games in the Frontier Conference. So, Northern was hoping the Armory Gymnasium would be just what it needed to get going again. But Sunday afternoon in the Armory, the Dickinson State Blue Hawks had other ideas. In what MSU-N head coach Shawn Huse called a concerning trend of...

  • Ponies experience growing pains in the Mining City

    Chris Peterson|Updated Dec 10, 2018

The Havre High wrestling team was in Butte over the weekend, taking part in the annual Mining City Duals. However, this year would have a different feel for the Blue Ponies, as their run of five consecutive team championships came to a close. While the Ponies did finish the weekend on a positive note with a couple of wins Saturday, which pushed their overall record to 3-2, losses to Polson and Billings Senior Friday kept Havre out of the championship bracket and doomed their...

During his one season at North Star coaching alongside the late Griff Bye, Walynn Burgess learned a lot about basketball. He also learned a little something about Hawaiian shirts. Well, Saturday night in the HHS gymnasium, when Burgess coached his first game as the head of the Blue Ponies, he wore a Hawaiian shirt to honor his late colleague and like it did so many times for Bye, the shirt proved to be good luck for Burgess as his Ponies won their home opener in resounding...

  • Pony swimmers fast in their pool

    George Ferguson|Updated Dec 10, 2018

Each new swim season has to start somewhere, and in some way. And for the Havre Blue Pony swim teams, there's no better way to start the season then in the friendly confines of their own pool. That's exactly what the Blue Ponies did as they played host to the CMR Rustlers and Great Falls High Bison in the season-opening Havre Invitational at the Havre Community Pool. "It went real well," Havre High head coach Bill Kilgore said. "We have a lot of new swimmers, where it was...
