  • Arbiter rules against fire department in grievance

    Alex Ross|Updated Dec 12, 2016

A Havre firefighter said he is glad an arbiter ruled in his favor, saying the fire department improperly kept him from promotion. “I’m very grateful for the arbiter’s decision,” firefighter D.J. Olson said in a text message Saturday. “It was a long, unnecessary and expensive process to the union and the city that could have been avoided.” Though he did not say why, Olson said he believes the city’s actions were retaliatory and that the arbitration decision supports that. • Should Democrats become the party of no?

    Updated Dec 12, 2016

Barack Obama had just beaten John McCain by a margin of 10 million votes and 7.2 percentage points — the biggest Democratic win since 1964. Democrats also won both congressional chambers. And yet, despite this decisive pro-Democratic mandate to govern, congressional Republicans resolved, at a private dinner on day one, not to offer a scintilla of cooperation. They resolved to thwart Obama’s efforts to fix the Great Recession, hoping that his failures would grease a Republican comeback in the 2012 race. Newt Gingrich, a din...

  • Repeat after me: Santa is not white

    Updated Dec 12, 2016

Larry Jefferson, a black man, played Santa Claus at the Mall of America in Minnesota for four days last week. Naturally, racists on the internet lost their minds over it. “I clicked on the story fully expecting that they picked a Somali to play Santa. That would be fitting for Minnesota,” someone named Victor Edwards, surely destined for a lump of coal in his stocking, wrote in the comments to a story posted by a CBS station in Minnesota. “Have a radical muslim who hates America and the western world play Santa. Give him a...

  • The president-elect of a post-fact world

    Updated Dec 12, 2016

There is almost nothing real about “reality TV.” All but the dullest viewers understand that the dramatic twists and turns on shows like “Bachelor” or “Celebrity Apprentice” are scripted in advance. More or less like professional wrestling, Donald Trump’s previous claim to fame. Welcome to the reality TV presidency. Nothing president-elect Trump says is to be taken literally, nor evaluated for its truth content. His surrogates have made that clear. Once and future sidekick Corey Lewandowski recently admonished journalists at...

  • Defense of Ben Carson's appointment to HUD

    Updated Dec 12, 2016

How do we know Dr. Ben Carson is unqualified to be Secretary of Housing and Urban Development? Because House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said so, calling him “disturbingly unqualified.” “There is no evidence that Dr. Carson brings the necessary credentials to hold a position with such immense responsibilities and impact on families and communities across America,” Pelosi said. She supported President Obama’s nominee, Julian Castro, whose “necessary” experience in the housing industry was limited to being mayor of San Antoni...

  • HHS girls win two at tipoff tourney

    Chris Peterson|Updated Dec 12, 2016

The Havre High girls basketball team opened the season a long way from home. Yet, the Blue Ponies’ long trip to Sidney proved worthwhile, as they left the Central/Eastern A Tip-off tournament with two wins. Havre took care of business against Sidney Friday, knocking off the host Eagles 40-23. Then Saturday, the Ponies beat Laurel in a divisional rematch from last season by the score of 49-37. In typical fashion, HHS allowed just 60 points, showing its defense to be in m...

The Glacier Nationals were on the road this past weekend and against the Missoula Jr. Bruins, the Nationals struggled to stay competitive as they lost badly in back-to-back games. The two teams met Friday and Saturday nights in Missoula and in the first game, Missoula won by a score of 14-1. In the second game Saturday, the Jr. Bruins shutout Glacier and won 11-0. The meeting between the two teams Friday contained very little drama as the game was decided in the opening...

  • Ponies own the Mining City, again

    Chris Peterson|Updated Dec 12, 2016

The Havre High wrestling team has enjoyed a lot of success in Butte over the years and this past weekend, the Blue Ponies added another trophy from the Mining City Duals — their fourth straight. Havre ended up in the winner’s circle when it was all said and done, but the team championship didn’t come as easily as it has in years past. The Ponies, who went 7-0 at the meet a year ago, lost a dual Saturday morning in the preliminary round, before rallying to beat Billings Skyvi...

    Chris Peterson|Updated Dec 12, 2016

The Havre High boys basketball team made its debut this past weekend, but unfortunately for the Blue Ponies, it wasn't the debut they wanted. Havre opened its 2016-17 season by hosting Sidney and Laurel Friday and Saturday night in the Central/Eastern A Tip-off Tournament and dropped both games, losing to Sidney 58-53, followed by a 57-34 loss to Laurel. Both games were played inside the HHS gymnasium. "We have a lot of work to do," HHS head coach Curt Leeds said. "We are...
