Tonight is a big, big night for both the Montana Grizzlies and the Montana State Bobcats. It's big because, in a rare occasion, both the No. 5 Cats (10-3) and No. 6 Griz (10-3) are playing in the FCS quarterfinals. Yes, in the same season, the Cats and Griz are both in the final eight of the playoffs. And while MSU's night game with Austin Peay has a trip to the semifinals on the line in Bozeman, and the Griz' rematch with Weber State under the lights in Ogden is a game with m...

  • Hello, God. It's me, Mara.

    Updated Dec 13, 2019

You know, Lord, why we write “Xmas” instead of “Christmas,” the short-hand way, got us curious; so, we stopped at the library. A book of origins explained some of the things we do at Christmas. One reference stated: “If you wonder why Christmas is sometimes written “Xmas,” it’s because “X” is the Greek equivalent of “Ch,” used to represent the word “Christ.” “Xmas.” A dictionary refers one to XP (the same as Christmas), as the first two letters (chi and rho) of the Greek word “khristos,” a symbol or emblem for Christ. After C...

    Updated Dec 13, 2019

Having only been an Assembly of God minister, I have never been a part of a religious tradition that celebrates the Advent Season. Nevertheless, because of my contacts over the years with ministers of other denominations within ministerial associations – I decided this year to lead our church, Havre Assembly, in observance of Advent. • Out Our Way: The Christmas Chinook - Luke 1:1-10

    Updated Dec 13, 2019

Out our way winter, can be harsh, but as Charlie often reminded me, it is a small price to pay for the glories of spring, summer and winter on the Hi-Line. And although we do have the infamous “Alberta Clippers” that can drop several feet of snow and drop the thermometer to minus 40 at times, God also sends us the chinook winds that remind us winter is not forever. Although Biblical scholars acknowledge that Dec. 25 is not likely Christ’s actual birthday — the passage in Luke 2:6-20 showing the shepherds in the hills indicat...

  • View from the North 40: My dog, in his next life

    Pam Burke|Updated Dec 13, 2019

It occurred to me this week that, as I have been watching my dog, Cooper, negotiate his way through his elder years, if Cooper were a human I would recognize him immediately. As a dog, he looks exactly like his breeding, a gray Schnauzer and something-black-and-tan-ish cross, with a full beard, perky ears, wiry-haired legs and a pair of wild old-man eyebrows. At 45 pounds, the “something” in his lineage was obviously bigger than his 15-pound miniature Schnauzer mother. An olde...

    Aarron Thompson|Updated Dec 13, 2019

It is time once again for the Havre High swim team to take a dive into the water. There is always something refreshing in taking that first jump into the pool, especially when it is inside their very own home, the Havre Community Pool. Once again, led by head coach Bill Kilgore, the veteran swim coach is excited for his boys and girls teams to hav...
