  • Business equipment tax reduction among new laws

    MATT VOLZ Associated Press|Updated Dec 29, 2013

HELENA — An estimated 17,000 small businesses in Montana will be exempt from paying the state's business equipment tax under a new law that takes effect on Wednesday. The reduction in the business equipment tax is one of a handful of bills passed by the Legislature last spring that become law with the new year. Starting Wednesday, businesses will be exempt from paying taxes on their first $100,000 in equipment. That means if a small business has less than $100,000 in equipment, it won't have to pay any of the tax. P...

  • Prosecutors oppose letting off ex-pot lobbyist

    MATT VOLZ Associated Press|Updated Dec 27, 2013

HELENA (AP) — Federal prosecutors oppose a former medical marijuana lobbyist's request to be removed from probation so he can tend to his sick mother without restrictions. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Thaggard said Thursday in response to Tom Daubert's request that early termination is reserved for rare cases of exceptionally good behavior. Thaggard says the health of Daubert's 83-year-old mother and his desire to resurrect his consulting career do not justify ending his five-year probation sentence after only one year. U...

  • Montana's new Indian prisons liaison talks goals

    Updated Dec 27, 2013

GREAT FALLS (AP) — The American Indian liaison for the state Department of Corrections says he's working to provide cultural awareness to agency staffers and to help Native American inmates prepare for their release. Harlan Trombley told the Great Falls Tribune (http://gftrib.com/1ad53Qh ) that after a month in the job, he's found that corrections staff often don't understand traditional practices such as smudging, when herbs are burned so the smoke can be used as a cleansing agent. "They don't know what that is or why i...

    Updated Dec 27, 2013

Laurel — The Salvation Army made sure that nearly 300 kids on the Hi-Line received Christmas gifts they wouldn't have had otherwise. Actually, the Salvation Army didn't do it a alone. Lots of Hi-Liners took part by picking cards from the Giving Tree and buying the gifts. And volunteers helped distribute the gifts. Dart — The short Christmas season and the bitter cold weather made it difficult for Salvation Army to raise as much money as usual during the Red Kettle Campaign. The campaign is over, but you can still write a che...

  • Havre of the Past: New trains on the Great Northern

    Emily Mayer|Updated Dec 27, 2013

The newspaper on microfilm for this week in 1893 is not available, so we will go back in time to 1898, when Havre had been incorporated for five years. Entries for this article, which is the 51st installment of this series celebrating Havre's 120th anniversary of incorporation, come from the Dec. 23, 1898 issue of The Milk River Eagle. Good news came to Havre with this announcement, complete with misspelling: Two Trains After Jan. 1st Beginning with the first of the year the...

  • Let's just name it George

    Pam Burke|Updated Dec 27, 2013

Anymore, I’m happy once Christmas is over not because I am curmudgeonly or because of the commercialism, or the mad frenzy to have everything ready for the big day, or even the constant sound-barrage of Christmas music. It’s the big mud-pit brawl over whether Christmas is a holiday or a holy day that is sucking the life out of the celebration. If there were such a designation as “The Biggest Brouhaha Over Nothing,” my vote would see the award go to the argument-cloud surroun...

The league has been dominated by bigs, and team’s who have them usually contend for conference championships. The 2013-14 season should be no different. • 2014 Frontier Basketball Preview: Posts

    George Ferguson|Updated Dec 27, 2013

There’s no question the talent at the guard position in Frontier Conference men’s basketball is outstanding this season. But there’s no shortage of great post players either, and it seems just about every team which has a great guard, also has a big man to go with him. But the Lights have certainly got great post play out of some undersized bigs in hi...
