Chester, Blue Sky each win in first round

With wins in the first round, Blue Sky and Chester will face each other in second-round action this afternoon with the winner advancing to the semifinal game Saturday morning.

Chester defeated Dutton/Brady in three games 15-3, 15-9, 15-7 to advance while Blue Sky defeated Valier in four games, 7-15, 15-12, 15-10, 15-11.

Leaders for the Coyotes were Katy Engstrom with 10 kills and Michele VanDyke with seven kills and six blocks. Engstrom added three aces with Maci Tempel and Chasi Buffington each adding two.

The Eagles were led by Cassidy Han's 12 kills and Lindsay Anderson with 11. Jessica Patrick and Heather Wendland each had five blocks. Holly Haas led with five aces with Anderson adding four.

In the opening match of the tournament, Big Sandy fell to Belt in four games, 15-8, 4-15, 7-15, 14-16.

Shana Davis topped the stats for the Pioneers with 11 kills, three aces and seven digs. Laceen Ophus also had 11 kills with Darice Grass adding six. Grass also had 13 digs with Ophus leading with 14. Grass and Haley Grubb each added two aces with Grubb leading in assists with 22.

Big Sandy faced Centerville in a loser-out game this morning.

In other tournament action, Sunburst won in three games over Centerville.

Carly Kleinert guided the Refiners with 21 kills and two blocks. Miranda Diegel followed with five aces, five kills, eight digs and one block.
