Coalition plans safe driving push for St. Patricks Day

The Safe Connection Coalition is working to reduce the number of drunken drivers on St. Patrick's Day.

A branch of HELP (Havre Encourages Long-range Preven-tion) and an extension of HELP's Safe and Sober program, the coalition will furnish three Havre bars with a means to do so.

Working with the Hill County Tavern Association, the 10-member coalition is distributing mugs to PJ's Lounge, the Corner Bar and Shamrock's Bar & Casino, according to Elissa Dahl, a HELP prevention specialist. The mugs will be given to designated drivers on Sunday, who will receive free nonalcoholic drinks all night, Dahl said.

"The coalition is just looking at doing more things for impaired driving," she said. "Last year, there were 45 reported accidents that involved alcohol (in Havre). It's obviously something that needs to be addressed."

Established last fall, the coalition also has a child safety program in which low-income families can rent a child safety seat for a nominal fee, Dahl said.
