Nothing to do next week? Try the Heritage Center for fun

The Heritage Center has a full slate of activities scheduled for the next week, starting with a winter fair Saturday.

Carnival 2002 runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the third floor of the center.

A popcorn booth and other food and refreshments will be available. Activities will include a bake walk, a fishing pool, face and body painting, temporary tattoos.

The carnival will hold raffles, at a cost of $1 a ticket, or six for $5. The games cost 25 cents each or five for $12.

Two events are set for March 27, starting with a celebrity luncheon at noon. Loy Chvilicek of Havre will present "Lady Loy Ann's Victorian Tea," a program about Victorian folklore.

Chvilicek puts on the Victorian program in full costume in her home and around the state. She has put on the program for friends and for birthday parties, wedding showers, visitors to the Havre area, and many groups and organizations.

The third floor of the Heritage Center will have tables decorated in Victorian style, and people attending are encouraged to dress in costume. Some period hats will be available to wear at the luncheon.

The lunch will follow Chvilicek's presentation. Space for the event is limited so people are asked to call to register by Monday. The cost is $15.

At 7 p.m. on March 27 Great Falls Tribune special projects editor Eric Newhouse will give a presentation.

Newhouse, 56, won the Pulitzer Prize in 2000 for his 12-part series, "Alcohol: Cradle to Grave," that examined the effects of alcoholism in the Great Falls area. The series has been published in book form by Hazelden Foundation, and Newhouse will be available to sign the book at the presentation.

Newhouse earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin and master's degrees from the University of Maryland and Columbia University, where he was also honored as an international fellow.

He worked for the Associated Press for 18 years before joining the Great Falls Tribune in 1988. At the Tribune, he has worked as news editor and sports editor as well as special projects editor.

A nonperishable food item, which will be donated to a charitable organization, is required for admission to Newhouse's presentation.
