MICHAEL MCKERNAN, Obituary

GRESHAM, Ore. Michael P. McKernan, 84, of Gresham, Ore., a retired Bonneville Power supervisor, died Monday, March 25, 2002, at a Portland hospital.

Vigil services will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at Hennessey's Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Christ the King Church in Portland.

Mike was born on March 17, 1918, in Box Elder to Hannah and Mike McKernan. He farmed with his dad until he entered the service in 1940. He served in the Pacific Theater and was stationed at Pearl Harbor at the time of the Japanese attack on Dec. 7, 1941.

He was very active in Democratic Party politics in Oregon for many years. He served as a delegate to the National Democratic Convention in Los Angeles in 1960 with the purpose of nominating John F. Kennedy as the presidential candidate.

Mike was a member of the VFW, Elks Club, Lions Club, and was a fourth degree Knight in Knights of Columbus.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, and was an avid fan of the Portland State University Vikings.

Survivors include his wife, Alice McKernan of Portland; son, Michael of Portland; daughter, Nancy of Portland; sisters, Mary Brady and Nora Nelson, both of Havre, Kay Schweitzer of Whitefish, and Patty Warhank of Rudyard; grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Phyllis McKernan Scholar-ship Fund in Christ the King Church.
