Town Pump helps food bank with fund-raiser

The North Havre Community Food Bank is joining with the Town Pump Charitable Foundation in the "Helping Those in Need" fund-raising campaign. The foundation will match every dollar donated to the Havre food bank up to $2,500.

The Havre food bank has served the needs of Havre and Hill County for more than 20 years. Anyone in need of food can obtain an emergency food box at the Havre food bank, 453 Seventh Ave. N.

It's open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Wednesday from 1 to 5 p.m. "In 2001 a total of 1,131 food boxes were distributed, totaling 61,500 pounds of food," said Don Bleak, food bank manager. "We see a steady increase in the need of our services, particularly after the holiday pinch and in the summer when school lunch programs are not available. Also, unemployment and underemployment in this area is rising."

The number of people in a household determines the amount of food a family can receive. To receive a food box, an individual must bring proof of identification and proof of address.

The Havre food bank relies on both food and financial donations. It receives some of the food it distributes from individuals, churches, civic organizations, businesses, gardeners, ranchers and farmers, and hunters. Additional supplies are bought at local stores or comes from the Montana Food Bank Network in Missoula.

The United Way provides money to the food bank. The Town Pump Charitable Organization will match dollar for dollar up to $2,500 all money collected at Town Pump Food Stores, Magic Diamond, Lucky Lil's, Havre food bank, and District 4 Human Resources Development Council at 2229 Fifth Ave. The campaign runs through May 18. It is part of a $50,000 matching campaign the Town Pump Charitable Foundation has initiated in 20 communities across Montana.
