District Music Festival in Havre this weekend

More than 800 students from 12 Montana high schools will participate in this weekend's District Music Festival at Havre High School and Havre Middle School.

Beginning Friday at 8:30 a.m., musicians and vocalists from Big Sandy, KG, Chester, Chinook, Blue Sky, Cut Bank, Shelby, Valier, North Toole County, J-I, Browning and Havre will perform and compete in instrumental and choral solos, duets and ensembles.

All performances are free to the public.

"It's not really a public thing, although they can come in. There are usually some parents and friends who attend," said Frank Payn, Havre High School choral director. "It's mostly for the kids. But the public is welcome to come watch anything they want."

For most of the students, Payn said, the district festival is the largest musical event of the year.

The competition, which Havre hosts every other year, will continue until 4:30 p.m. on Friday, and will begin again at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. In other years, the festival is held at Cut Bank or Shelby, Payn said.

On Friday, the bands will compete at the high school, while choirs will compete at Havre Middle School. All performers will compete at the high school on Saturday. Schedules are available at both schools on Friday and at the high school on Saturday.
