Officials warn against shooting from vehicles on public roadways

After receiving several complaints, the state Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks is warning area residents that it is unlawful to shoot firearms from public roadways.

"This time of year, it can be a problem," said Shane Reno, the Havre-area game warden.

Reno also said he has received complaints about people trespassing on private property while gopher hunting.

"We want to get people in the practice of asking the landowner for permission," Reno said.

The most popular area for gopher hunting is south of Chinook and Havre.

Gopher hunters "have to use the same safety practices when they're hunting big game," Reno said.

Violations can be reported to the Hill County Sheriff's Office (265-2512) or the Fish, Wildlife and Parks hotline (1-800-TIP-MONT).
