Havre Jaycees shooters take second at state competition

The Havre Jaycees took 21 shooters to the Montana State BB Gun Competition in Belgrade April 13-14.

Six Jaycee chapters participated in the state competition with 112 competitors. The 21 Havre shooters made up three different teams.

Havre team No. 1 brought home second place. The Havre team No. 2 was in second place after the first day but fell to fifth at the end. The Havre team No. 3 scored many personal bests and brought home 16th place.

Sara Lippy brought home second place overall in aggregate.

"This was a growing year for the local program," Cliff Plum, project chair and head coach said. "We have been struggling to get kids interested. The program is designed to teach safety and respect for firearms to the younger children of the Havre community. There will be firearms in our community for a long time to come, so we take the young children and teach them what to do if they find a gun or if they happen to see a little brother or sister playing with one."

Plum said the state competition is to let the youth involved show what they have learned.

"Shooting in competition with other kids in the state helps to keep them interested in the program," he said.
