Tharaud named athlete of week

University of Chicago senior Jerome Tharaud, son of Cynthia and Robert Harrison of Havre, was recently named the athlete of the week by the University Athletic Association for men's outdoor track and field.

At the 2002 Chicagoland Championships on April 6, Tharaud won the steeplechase with a time of 9 minutes 17.99 seconds. His time was the third-fastest time in the NCAA Division III and the best in the UAA.

This was the second time this season Tharaud was named as UAA Athlete of the Week but the first during the outdoor season. Tharaud and his distance medley relay teammates were recoginzed during the indoor season.

Also, the University of Chicago's men's and women's cross country teams were recognized as Cross Country Coaches Association National All-Academic Teams. Three members of the men's team, including Tharaud, were named as Academic All-Americans by the coaches association. The team award is based on the cumulative grade point average of each athlete on the team's roster, while the individual award criteria includes the athlete's finish at the regional meet as well as the cumulative GPA.
